LARAMIE, Wyo. (8/13/23) – While there may not be many goalkeepers at the University of Wyoming, the ones that are present bring a diverse set of skills, backgrounds and experience levels to the Cowgirls. There's a sixth-year graduate competing for her second Division I program. There's a junior college transfer looking to make the jump alongside a patient redshirt freshman and a talented true freshman.
"Our goalkeepers are a fun group," head coach Colleen Corbin said. "The dynamic between all of them in a training and competitive environment has been really positive. It's a credit to Lindsay (LaMont) our new goalkeeper coach. She's embraced a pretty diverse group of goalkeepers. She's helped to create a positive environment where learning and growing is the focal point."
Miyuki Schoyen headlines the collection of talent in net. The captain is set to start her second season in net after transferring in from Drexel before last season.
Schoyen started all 15 games she was available in 2022. She made 59 saves, allowing 18 goals for a GAA of 1.19.
Schoyen closed 2022 in fine form. She started and logged a combined shutout in the regular-season finale at Colorado State before blanking both San Diego State and San Jose State during the Cowgirls' Mountain West Conference Tournament run.
"Miyuki has matured a lot in the last year," Corbin said. "She got voted captain, which I think speaks volumes about how the rest of the team views her in her role and her impact. She's trained really hard, and she has big goals for herself and this team. I'm excited for her to be leading that goalkeeper group."
Allison Collinwood will help to back up Schoyen. She arrived in Laramie this spring after a year and half at Western Wyoming Community College.
"Ally definitely had a big transition in the spring coming from the JUCO level to this level," Corbin said. "She's incredibly positive and a bubbly person that the girls love being around, and she loves being around the team. This fall for her is about competing and putting herself in a position to grow both mentally and physically."
Finley Crabtree enters her second year with the program. She redshirted last year as a true freshman out of Portland.
"Finley has a year under her belt, and she understands the environment the level of intensity," Corbin said. "For her it's about continuing to push and grow and challenge those around her."
Haley Bartel – who goes by the name "Hobbs" – rounds out the goalkeeping room. This marks her first season with Wyoming after finishing her high school career in Gilbert, Arizona, this past spring.
"Bartel has come in and immediately impacted the goalkeeper group in a positive way," Corbin said. "She's vocal, she's competitive, she's athletic and she hasn't been afraid to step up as a young player in big moments and make big saves."
Those four and the rest of the Cowgirls open the season Thursday. They play host to Colorado School of Mines at 4 p.m. at the Madrid Sports Complex.
