LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 3, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowgirls put their five-game road winning streak on the line Saturday with a bigtime Border War matchup with Colorado State down in Moby Arena. Tip-off with the Rams is set for 1 p.m.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with David Settle on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (15-7, 8-3 MW) is looking to extend its road winning streak to six games Saturday at CSU. The last time the Cowgirls have won six consecutive on the road came from January 23 to March 2 of 2019. Dating back to last season, UW has won 8-of-10 on the road in Mountain West play.
The Cowgirls are coming off a 68-54 victory Thursday night in Laramie over San Jose State. Grace Ellis and Allyson Fertig were outstanding in the victory, combining for 36 points on 16-for-23 shooting, 15 rebounds, four blocks and a pair of steals. Fertig tallied her sixth double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds on the night. She was also great defensively, notching four blocks and a steal. Ellis, meanwhile, had 17 points and four boards, while hitting a pair of 3-pointers and tallying three assists.
UW has had a balanced offensive attack during Mountain West play thus far on the season. Four Cowgirls are averaging in double figures though the first 11 conference games and are led by Fertig's 12.6 points and eight rebounds per contest. Fertig is shooting over 58-percent from the field in league play and averages over two blocks per contest. A trio of Cowgirls are averaging at least 10.2 points per contest in MW-play in Quinn Weidemann (10.8), Malene Pedersen (10.6) and Ellis (10.2). Wyoming's 46-percent shooting as a team the last 11 games ranks second-best in the league. The Cowgirls are averaging 66.2 points per game and holding opponents to 62.5 per.
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE
Colorado State is led by the Mountain West's top scorer in McKenna Hofschild, who is averaging 21.5 points per game overall and 23.4 per in conference games. Hofschild also leads the league with 161 assists this season and is shooting nearly 52-percent from the field and 52-percent from beyond-the-arc. Hofschild is also second on the team with 21 steals this season. Destiny Thurman is second on the Rams in both scoring (14.2 PPG) and rebounding (5.1 RPG) and has a team-best 25 steals and has hit 43-of-47 free throws. Cailyn Crocker also averages in double figures, coming in at 11.8 points per contest. Cali Clark leads the team with 6.7 rebounds a game and has 30 blocks.
As a team, CSU is averaging over 77 points per game while 65 a contest. The Rams are shooting 46.1-percent from the field and nearly 40-percent from beyond-the-arc. Colorado State opponents have shot just over 37-percent overall and nearly 33-percent from 3-point range. CSU is averaging 15.1 assists per game this season and turns it over under nine times per contest. The Rams have been out-rebounded 39 to 35.3 as a team this season.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST COLORADO STATE
Colorado State leads the all-time series by the slimmest of margins, 55-54, including winning 2-of-3 matchups last season. Wyoming is looking to snap a three-game losing streak at Moby Arena, having last won on the road in February of 2020. The Cowgirls are 21-27 all-time in the series in Fort Collins.
