GREENWOOD, Ind. (Feb. 21, 2023) – Four Wyoming Cowgirls have been named to the College Sports Communicators Women's Basketball Academic All-District Team, announced Tuesday by the organization. Allyson Fertig, Emily Mellema, Tommi Olson and Quinn Weidemann were all honored.
In order to be selected to the all-district team, a student-athlete must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or better, be a starter or significant contributor off the bench and have appeared in at least 50-percent of her team's games in 2022-23. The honor is the first for Fertig, Mellema and Olson and the second for Weidemann. The four will now be up for consideration for Academic All-American honors, which will be announced in mid-March.
Fertig leads the Cowgirls in scoring (12.6 points per game), rebounding (8.8) and blocked shots (2.0) this season while shooting 58-percent from the field. Fertig has 17 games where she's scored in double figures, including four 20-plus point games this season. She also has recorded seven double-doubles. Mellema has appeared in all 27 games this season and is averaging 5.8 points, 1.7 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game off the bench for the Cowgirls. Mellema leads the team with 24 steals and has scored 10-or-more points six times in 2022-23, including a career-best 16 at Nevada.
Olson, who along with Fertig, has started in all 27 games this season for Wyoming, is averaging a team-best 2.7 assists per game. Olson averages 4.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as well while shooting a team-best 41-percent from 3-point range. Olson has five games this season with two-plus steals and five-or-more assists. Weidemann is second on the team averaging 11.8 points per game and leads the Cowgirls with 44 made 3-pointers while shooting 38-percent from beyond-the-arc. Weidemann, who has gone for double figures 17 times this season, is tied with Mellema with 24 steals on the year.
These four have helped lead UW to an 18-9 record overall in 2022-23 and an 11-5 mark in the Mountain West. The Cowgirls close the regular season this week with a pair of home contests as Nevada comes to town Thursday while rival Colorado State will be in the Arena-Auditorium Saturday.
