HOUSTON, Texas (2/16/23) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team enjoyed a successful Day 2 at the Mountain West Conference Championships inside CRWC Natatorium. The Cowgirls boasted three individual A finalists and a bevy of career-best times.
"Our women are competing with a lot of heart," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "Maisyn in the 500 was a phenomenal race start to finish. There were a lot of PRs in the 500, but none were as significant as
Berkeley Christensen's eight-second drop. Carly went a best time in the 200 IM, and
Sydney McKenzie dropped two seconds in her IM."
The Cowgirls sit in fourth place with 369 points. San Diego State leads the way, having scored 663 points, while UNLV and Nevada round out the top three with 436 and 432 points, respectively.
Maisyn Klimczak led the way for Wyoming. She narrowly missed a conference title in the 500-yard freestyle, placing second with a personal-best time of 4:46.18.
Carly Palmer kept the momentum going in her 200-yard individual medley. She took sixth with a personal-best time of 2:01.73.
Alicia Gonzalez registered a sixth-place finish of her own. She accumulated a personal-best 307.85 points in the 3-meter competition.
"Once again, our divers are scoring big points for us," Denniston said.
The 400-yard medley relay team put an exclamation point on the night with a fourth-place finish. The collection of
Emily Giles, Palmer,
Sydney McKenzie and
Kali Franckowiak clocked in at 3:40.02.
"The night was capped off with our 400-yard medley relay where we moved from eighth to fourth," Denniston said. "
Emily Giles led us off with a PR in the 100 back.
"There is energy in the building, and we are getting better each session."
The championships continue Friday with preliminary races of the 400-yard IM at 9:30 a.m.
