COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 20, 2023) – Wyoming volleyball's Sarah Holcomb has been named this week's Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office. It marks the first-career player of the week honor for Holcomb and the second time this season a Cowgirl has been named defensive player of the week.
Holcomb was the backbone of a Wyoming defense that held opponents to just a .152 hitting percentage in the final week of the season. The Cowgirls defeated Air Force in four sets and swept New Mexico in the season finale Saturday night. For the week, Holcomb tallied 16 total blocks for a 2.29 per set average.
The Mountain West's leader in blocks added to that total last week. Holcomb opened the week with seven blocks, one solo and six assisted in the win over Air Force. She then followed that up by tying a career-high with nine blocks in the sweep over the Lobos. Holcomb also had a pair of digs in the win over AFA.
Monday was the final week Mountain West Players of the Week were announced. Holcomb joined Skylar Erickson, Sierra Grizzle and Kasia Partyka as Cowgirls to have received player of the week nods in 2023. Erickson and Partyka were named the defensive and offensive players of the week, respectively September 4 while Grizzle was named freshman of the week October 9.
