LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/14/23) – The University of Wyoming swim team puts a bow on its fall competition schedule this week. The Cowboys and Cowgirls travel to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Colorado Mesa Invite from Wednesday through Saturday inside El Pomar Natatorium.
The four-day meet has a similar structure to the Mountain West Conference and Western Athletic Conference Championships. The format will allow Wyoming's youngsters, who have shown well in duals this season, to showcase what they can do in a meet with a postseason feel.
"We've been very pleasantly surprised by most of our newcomers," Denniston said. "You still don't know what they can truly do. We've seen some great indicators in practice of some special swims that could happened."
With the meet standing as the final one until after the New Year, Wyoming will be slightly tapered. Denniston is excited to see what his swimmers can do whilst being a little rested.
"With a little bit of rest and taper and a fast suit, we'll see how fast they can go," Denniston said. "It's a chance for our team to really see how the training has gone so far. We've already seen really good indicators through our dual meet season."
The dual season thus far has been phenomenal. The Cowgirls sit at 5-0, which is their best start since the 2016-17 season, and the Cowboys are 3-0, boasting a win over their biggest rival.
Tara Joyce holds the most individual victories thus far for the women with 10 while
Maisyn Klimczak isn't far behind with nine. Both
Charlie Clark and
Quinn Cynor lead the way for the men with five individual wins apiece.
As mentioned, this marks the final competition of 2023. The next meet is a tri-meet at Denver from Jan. 12-13.
