HOPEWELL, N.J. (Oct. 25, 2023) – The Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Watch List, presented by Her Hoop Stats was announced Wednesday morning. Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball's Allyson Fertig was one of 25 student-athletes named to the list. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed be "mid-major."
Fertig, who was named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team earlier this month, was an All-Mountain West Team member a season ago. Fertig averaged 13.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game in 2022-23 and shot nearly 59-percent from the field. Fertig scored in double figures 22 times a season ago and had six contests with 20-or-more points. She also tallied 11 double-digit rebound games and had nine double-doubles.
Fertig and the rest of the Cowgirls will be holding an open practice Friday night in Sheridan at 5:30 p.m., with admission free to the public. Wyoming opens the season with an exhibition contest November 2 against Western Colorado. The regular season tips off Nov. 6 against North Dakota. Both games tip at 6:30 p.m.
The Becky Hammon Award is named for the three-time All-America and former WNBA All-Star, who retired in 2014. Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history in 2014, when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs. In January, the 15-player midseason watch list will be announced, followed by 10 semifinalists in February. The five finalists for the award will be announced in early March with the winner named around the Final Four.
