LAS VEGAS, Nev. (1/28/23) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team completed competition in a quad meet at UNLV on Saturday. The Cowgirls claimed a pair of team wins inside Jim Reitz Pool.

Wyoming's women's team toppled the host Lady Rebels, 188.5-164.5. The Cowgirls also beat UC Santa Barbara, 183-168, while they fell to Hawaii, 233.5-119.5.

"Our women fought back to beat UNLV and had some great swims in the process," head coach Dave Denniston said. "Overall, our entire women's team had a great weekend."

Wyoming's men's team dropped their contests. The Cowboys lost to UNLV, 227-114, dropped a 178-168 decision to Hawaii and fell to UC Santa Barbara, 229-104.

"All of the men looked really sharp in their events," Denniston said. "Our team is really looking forward to resting and competing at conference."

Wyoming posted a couple individual victories; both being logged by Maisyn Klimczak. She topped the field in the 1,650-yard freestyle, boasting a time of 16:35.63, while also winning the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:50.74.  

Wyoming also had a slew of other top-five individual swims.

Charlie Clark took runner-up in the one-mile event, clocking in at 15:36.97. Clark added a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM, boasting a time of 3:56.11.

Carly Palmer placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, logging a time of 1:02.34. Palmer included a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.23, while Klimczak took fifth at 1:51.43. Palmer also finished fifth in the 200-yard IM, clocking in at 2:04.56.

The 200-yard freestyle had a pair of Cowboys in the top-five. Quinn Cynor was runner-up at 1:37.05, and Harry Tjaden was fifth at 1:39.37.

Gavin Smith and Tjaden both placed inside the top-five of the 200-yard butterfly. Smith took third with a time of 1:48.00, while Tjaden touched fifth with a time of 1:48.21. Smith added a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly after registering a time of 48.18.

Caleb Ozenne placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.86.

Brynlee Busskohl and Sydney McKenzie went 3-4 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Busskohl was third, clocking in at 2:15.29 and McKenzie was fourth at 2:16.99.

Kayla Cunningham and Ellie Fritscher placed fourth and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke. Cunningham finished fourth in a 2:00.36, while Fritscher was fifth at 2:03.73. Cunningham also placed fourth in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking in at 4:28.00.

Kody Hollingsworth took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke after recording a time of 49.89.

Alicia Gonzalez and Nettie Knapton both claimed a top-five spot in the 3-meter event. Gonzalez had a final tally of 271.15 to take fourth, and Knapton accumulated a score of 263.15 to take fifth.

Gonzalez added a fifth-place finish in the 1-meter event, tallying a final score of 238.70.

Payton Lee placed fourth in the 1-meter event with a final score of 245.35. He was also fourth in the 3-meter event with a final tally of 295.90.

Sydney Metzler touched fifth in the 200-yard butterfly, registering a time of 2:05.09. David Mihalic rounded out the individual top-five finishes, posting fifth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:52.25.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team finished runner-up. The collection of Lauren Swartz, Kali Franckowiak, Mikayla Moore and Rachael Horne raced a time of 1:33.70.

The 400-yard freestyle relay also took runner-up. The team of Palmer, Horne, Emily Giles and Franckowiak.

The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team touched third. The grouping of Cynor, Jakob Borrman, Quinn Teller and Grant Sloan registered a time of 1:21.39.  

Wyoming's divers return to competition next week at the Air Force Diving Invite beginning Feb. 2. The swimmers are back in the pool at the DU First Chance Meet from Feb. 10-11.
