LARAMIE, Wyo. (7/19/22) – Not long ago,
Hannah Mclean-Leonard was setting school and pool records as a student-athlete for the University of Wyoming. She returns this season, in a different capacity, as a Graduate Assistant Coach with the Cowboys and Cowgirls.
"Wow, what an honor it is to be returning to the University of Wyoming swimming & diving team – a team that I had the privilege of being a part of not so long ago," Mclean-Leonard said. "I want to thank coach Dave (Denniston) for giving me the opportunity to work alongside him and his incredible coaching staff. The culture of this team is truly unmatched, and I can't wait to contribute in a different way upon my return."
Mclean-Leonard arrived in Laramie from Durban, South Africa. She swam for UW from 2017-20, and head coach
Dave Denniston is excited to welcome her back in a different role.
"It's a lot of fun for me to have a student-athlete come back in this role and develop a real friendship working with somebody you respect professionally but also know their athletic history," Denniston said. "That's exciting for anyone of us on the staff."
Mclean-Leonard enjoyed a fruitful career in the brown and gold. She set a school record in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 52.70, while also posting a Corbett Pool record of 54.38 in the same event.
Mclean-Leonard was a five-time All-Mountain West Conference selection. Three of those accolades were a result of two runner-up finishes and a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly.
In addition to her accolades, Mclean-Leonard was a captain, as well. Denniston is eager to see those traits transfer over into her new coaching scope.
"She was one of the best leaders and captains I've ever been around in this sport," Denniston said. "She was really good about being a friend to everyone and lending an ear but also holding her teammates accountable."
