LARAMIE, Wyo. (2/9/22) – The University of Wyoming swimming & diving team completes the regular-season portion of its schedule this weekend. The Cowboys and Cowgirls travel to Denver for the DU First Chance Invitational on Friday and Saturday inside El Pomar Natatorium.

For many of Wyoming's swimmers this meet represents the conclusion of their season. The participating roster in Denver will include student-athletes who weren't able to be placed onto the Mountain West Conference or Western Athletic Conference championship teams because of limited-roster sizes.

"It is our people who have either not been able to compete as much this year or are younger in our program but are still major contributing members," head coach Dave Denniston said. "There's something that everyone brings to this team. There's a lot of people that bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm and have made improvements but our roster size is limited for the championships."

Denniston is excited to see what those individuals can do, seeing as this is the theoretical exclamation point to their season.

"To be able to give them a taper and a chance to go full speed suited up and see what they're capable of doing – and in some ways prove me wrong for not taking them to conference – is great," Denniston said. "But in the end, a lot of the people going, I really want to see how fast they go given the year of training they've done."

In addition to the ones completing their season this weekend, there will also be a few men and women – who are competing at their respective championships – that will participate in one or two events apiece. That will allow those swimmers to not interrupt their taper and log another time in an event leading up to conference.

The DU First Chance Invitational begins Friday at 3 p.m. and wraps up Saturday at 10 a.m. The MWC championships run from Feb. 16-19, while the WAC championships span from Feb. 23-26.
