COLLEGE STATION, Texas (2/18/22) – On Thursday, University of Wyoming senior
Katelyn Blattner led throughout en route to a Mountain West Conference title in the 500-yard freestyle. On Friday inside Paup Pavilion, Blattner showcased that there's more than one way to win a third consecutive league title in a given event.
Blattner came from behind to snag her second MWC championship in as many days. She won the 200-yard freestyle, boasting a new school-record time of 1:46.82.
"KB getting the school record and once again earning a three-peat was a magical moment for Wyoming swimming," head coach
Dave Denniston said.
Blattner's performance helped the Cowgirls position themselves in fourth with 607.5 points after three days of competition. San Diego State leads with 1,082.5 points.
Fellow senior
Lainee Jones accompanied Blattner on the 200 free podium. Jones swam a 1:49.18 to place sixth.
"Lainee swam a great race to place sixth," Denniston said. "She continues to be the perfect role model and leader for this team."
Freshman
Kayla Cunningham boasted a sixth-place finish of her own. She did so swimming a 4:20.86 in the 400-yard individual medley, while freshman
Caitlyn Groff took fifth in the B final of the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:28.72.
A pair of Cowgirls competed in the B and C finals of the 200 free. Sophomore
Kali Franckowiak touched third in the B final with a time of 1:50.03, and senior
Sani Carsrud placed runner-up in the C final after clocking in at 1:50.76.
Sophomore
Carly Palmer took fifth and senior
Kira Crane eighth in the C final of the 100-yard butterfly. Palmer clocked in at 56.35 and Crane went a 57.20.
Freshman
Rachel Horne finished third in the B final of the 100-yard breaststroke, recording a time of 1:02.81. Sophomore
Isabel Rich touched third with a time of 1:04.34 in the C final, and senior
Andrea Niemann took seventh, clocking in at 1:05.23.
Junior
Emily Giles took third in the B final of the 100-yard backstroke after swimming a time of 55.36. Senior
Kira Crane and freshman
Sydney Metzler placed fifth and eighth, respectively, in the C final with times of 53.31 and 58.65.
"The girls in stroke heats swam with a lot of heart," Denniston said. "We saw some strong improvements from them."
The 200-yard freestyle team led off Friday night with a fourth-place finish. The collection of Crane, Horne, Franckowiak and Carsrud clocked in at 1:32.69.
Saturday's action begins with preliminary races for the 200-yard backstroke at 10 a.m. Finals that will take place include the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly, the platform and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
