Laramie, Wyo. (Dec. 7, 2022) -- On the evening of Thursday, Dec. 8, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department will hold a special graduation stole ceremony for its winter graduates and their families in the Wildcatter Stadium Club and Suites beginning at 6:30 p.m. A total of 16 Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes representing seven different programs are scheduled to graduate this winter.
Of the 16 graduates: four are current or members of the Wyoming Football team, four are members of the Cowgirl Soccer team, two are members of the Women's Track and Field teams, two are members of the Men's Track and Field team, two are members of the Cheer team, one is a member of the UW Rodeo team and one is a member of the Cowboy Wrestling team.
Winter graduates, members of their families and UW Athletics coaching and administrative staffs will participate in Thursday night's in-person stole ceremony.
"The stole ceremonies that we hold in the winter and spring each year are two of the most rewarding events we host," said Tom Burman, University of Wyoming Athletics Director. "Receiving a degree from the University of Wyoming is the primary goal for our student-athletes and it is something we feel should be celebrated.
"It is always great to see the graduates and their families come together, and it is an honor for us as administrators and coaches to share in this special moment in their lives.
"For some of these graduates, they have completed their eligibility and will be moving on to pursue their careers. For others who have eligibility remaining, they will continue to compete for our teams. We congratulate all of them for this great accomplishment, and we hope the bonds they have built as student-athletes will forever keep them connected to the university and to our athletics department."
The tradition of presenting UW student-athlete graduates with graduation stoles began with the spring semester of 2014 and has been held every semester since. The graduation stoles are provided to wear along with the graduation stole from each student-athlete's college during graduation. All stole ceremonies have been held in person except one. That one exception was in 2020 when stoles were provided to the graduates but the ceremony itself was a virtual event due to Coronavirus restrictions.
The UW Athletics' graduation stole is white with the familiar Steamboat Bucking Horse and Rider emblem on the right-hand side of the stole and a W-Club emblem on the left. Each graduating student-athlete will also receive a free W-Club membership for the coming year. The W-Club is the official organization for former Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes and coaches.
The 2022 UW winter commencement ceremonies will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. in the Arena-Auditorium for all graduating students.
