Laramie, Wyo. (Nov. 9, 2022) -- University of Wyoming Director of Golf and Head Men's Golf Coach
Joe Jensen has announced the signing of
Evan Johnson of Richland, Wash., and
Noah Wagner of Pueblo West, Colo., to National Letters of Intent (NLIs) with the Cowboy Golf team. Both will be incoming freshmen in the fall of 2023.
Johnson played his high school golf at Richland High School in Richland, Wash., where he earned First Team Mid-Columbia Conference (MCC) All-Conference honors all four years of high school.
In the spring of 2022, Johnson was named the MCC Player of the Year. He finished 13th at the 2022 Washington Class 4A State Championship in May of 2022, and as a team captain led his Richland High team to a sixth-place team finish. During the summer of 2022, Johnson tied for seventh at the Washington Junior Golf Association (WJGA) District 4 Championship and tied for ninth at the WJGA State Championship. He is planning to study finance at Wyoming. Johnson played for head golf coach Mike Neidhold at Richland High.
He is the son of Amy and Scott Johnson. His father, Scott, was a collegiate golfer at Arizona State, and his uncle, Chris, played golf at USC.
Wagner comes to Wyoming from Pueblo West High School in Pueblo West, Colo. He was a four-time Class 4A All-State selection in golf and won the South-Central League championship three times. He led his Pueblo West team to a fourth-place finish in the 4A State Golf Tournament in October of 2022, and he placed eighth individually -- only three strokes back of the state champion. In July of 2022, Wagner played in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Bandon Dunes, Ore.
The 6' 3", 200-pound multi-sport athlete, Wagner has also been a starter in basketball for three seasons at Pueblo West High. A 4.0 student, he earned Academic All-Conference honors and was involved in his high school's DECA program, making it to the DECA state competition all three years he participated. Wagner plans to major in business at UW. He played for head golf coach Dan Sanchez at Pueblo West.
Wagner is the son of Sara and Jamie Wagner. His father played basketball at Bismarck State in Bismarck, N.D. Wagner was also recruited by Air Force, Colorado State University Pueblo and Creighton.
"These two young men both really fit our recruiting profile," said Jensen. "They are very talented, athletic players. At various times during their careers, they have been multi-sport athletes, and they both have athletic pedigrees, with fathers who were college athletes. They are also strong academically and are hard workers, which fits with the type of student-athlete we like to recruit.
"Evan (Johnson) comes from a golf culture in the state of Washington where we have had several recruits come from in the past.
"Noah (Wagner) is the third player I've recruited out of Pueblo, Colo., so both of these young men come to us from backgrounds where they were taught the game by people who I know and trust.
"Both of them had additional college opportunities, so we are excited to have them join our program."
The NLI signing period for incoming college golf student-athletes opened on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
