LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 2, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will play their second and final exhibition contest in preparation for the 2022-23 season Saturday as Sioux Falls comes to Laramie for a 2 p.m., tip-off.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and can be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with Keith Kelley on the call.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming unofficially tipped off the season last week with a 68-36 exhibition win over Colorado Christian Friday. A total of 10 Cowgirls scored in the victory and were led by Quinn Weidemann's 20 points. Weidemann shot 5-of-6 from the floor overall and made all five of her 3-point attempts in the win while also grabbing five rebounds and recording three assists.
Emily Mellema also finished in double figures against the Cougars, scoring 13 points off the bench. Mellema also led the way with four assists and three steals in the win. Allyson Fertig tallied a game-high 11 boards while Marta Savic scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. Grace Moyers also had eight points as a reserve.
For the game, Wyoming out-rebounded CCU 56-26 and had a 22-1 advantage in second-chance points. The Cowgirl defense held the Cougars to just 24.5-percent shooting (13-53) from the floor and 3-of-22 from 3-point range. UW, meanwhile, shot 35-percent from the floor and made 9-of-28 from beyond-the-arc.
Saturday's contest is the Cowgirls' final tune-up before the season officially tips November 11 at North Dakota. Wyoming's home-opener is Nov. 15 against Gonzaga with an 8 p.m., tip.
SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
The Cougars were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC Preseason Poll while Megan Fannin was named to the Preseason Watch List by the league. Fannin led Sioux Falls last season averaging nearly 13 points per game and shot 34.2-percent from 3-point range. Krystal Carlson also returns to the Cougars in 2022-23 after ranking second on the team in 2021-22 in both scoring (10.3) and rebounding (4.9) per game. USF averaged 68.4 points per game as a team last season while opponents averaged 63.5 per contest. Sioux Falls finished last season 16-12 overall and 11-9 in conference play.
The Cougars are led by longtime head coach, Travis Traphagen, who is entering his 15th season leading the program. Saturday will be the first-ever meeting of any kind between the two programs.
SATURDAY'S PROMOTION
Once again this season, the Cowgirls will be signing autographs for fans after the game. The postgame autograph session is back after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.
