DALLAS, Texas (11/17/22) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team began the most competitive meet of the fall season Thursday. The Cowboys and Cowgirls took part in the SMU Invitational inside Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.
The Cowgirls boasted a top-finisher during Day 1 of the three-day meet. Maisyn Klimczak topped the field in the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 4:47.13 – the second-fastest time recorded in program history.
"Maisyn had a great day," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "I think she surprised herself."
Klimczak was the headline, but the team as a whole did great. Wyoming posted more than 20 lifetime-best times.
"The energy is high, and the team is loving racing together," Denniston said. "Mikayla Moore had a breakout day, going lifetime-best times in all of her events and dropping a lot of time. On the men's side, Gavin Smith scared the school record in the 100-yard butterfly, and
Harry Tjaden swam a personal-best in the 500-yard freestyle by two seconds."
The men's 200-yard freestyle relay owned the second-best finish Thursday. The team of Quinn Cynor,
Grant Sloan,
Jakob Borrman and Quinn Teller touched fourth with a time of 1:20.75.
Wyoming enjoyed plenty of other top-10 finishes on the day, as the men's team sits in fourth place with 136 points, and the women's team sits in fifth at 100 points.
Gavin Smith finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 48.13. Cynor wasn't far behind, going 48.24.
Charlie Clark and
Harry Tjaden duplicated that performance in the 500-yard freestyle. Clark was seventh at 4:27.53, and Tjaden was eighth at 4:29.08.
Sloan added to his day with a ninth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. He logged a time of 20.46.
Sydney McKenzie placed inside the top-10, as well. She touched ninth in the 200-yard individual medley, posting a time of 2:03.09.
Wyoming continues competing at the SMU Invite on Friday at 10 a.m. with preliminary races.
