Cowgirls Host Gonzaga in Home Opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 14, 2022) – The Wyoming Cowgirls tip-off a three-game homestand Tuesday night as the Cowgirls welcome Gonzaga to the Arena-Auditorium for an 8 p.m., home-opening tip.

Tuesday's game will be broadcast live on both the Mountain West Network and AT&T SportsNet. The game can also be heard across the Cowgirl Radio Network with Keith Kelley on the call.

ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming opened the season with a 67-55 road loss Friday at North Dakota, the Cowgirls' first road contest to begin a season since 2009. Malene Pedersen led the way in the loss to the Fighting Hawks with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. Pedersen made both of her 3-point and free-throw attempts in the contest while also adding four rebounds and tallied a team-high two steals.

Grace Ellis had a nice all-around game for the Cowgirls as she opened the season with nine points, six boards and a team-best three assists. Allyson Fertig, who spent most of the game in foul trouble, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine points in just 14 minutes of action. Tess Barnes led the Cowgirl bench with seven points, five rebounds and a block while Marta Savic added six points and five boards in 12 minutes of action.

UW looks to continue its tremendous home success, as it has compiled a 20-5 record at home in the last two seasons. Dating back to the 2015-16 season, the Cowgirls have won 10-or-more games at home in all but the Covid-19-shortened season of 2020-21, where UW went 8-2. In the last seven season, Wyoming is 84-23 in the Arena-Auditorium, a .785 winning percentage.

IN THE RECORD BOOKS
The two Cowgirl fifth-year seniors look to continue to climb up the all-time ranks in program history this season. Quinn Weidemann is seventh all-time at Wyoming in made 3-pointers with 198 makes, and eighth all-time in attempts with 487. Her career three-point field goal percentage of .407 is fourth all-time among Cowgirls. Weidemann's 86.8-percent career free-throw percentage is second all-time. Weidemann's career-high of seven made three pointers is tied for second-most in a single game in school history. Weidemann's 245 career assists is 18th in program history. Weidemann is also 21st all-time with 1,118 career points.

Tommi Olson has a career-high of nine steals in a game, which is tied for the most in a single game in school history. Olson's 147 career steals are tied for 12th all-time in program history. Olson's 282 career assists rank 14th all-time.

SCOUTING GONZAGA
Gonzaga enters Tuesday's contest with a 2-0 mark on the young season and is averaging 85.5 points per game while holding opponents to just 46 per contest. The Bulldogs are shooting 49.2-percent from the floor and 49-percent from 3-point range. GU opponents are shooting just 32.7-percent overall and 20.6-percent from beyond-the-arc.

Yvonne Ejim leads the team averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 57-percent from the field. Brynna Maxwell leads the team from deep, going 6-of-8 from 3-point range and is second on the squad averaging 13.5 points and six rebounds per contest. Twins Kayleigh and Kaylynne Truong are first and second, respectively on the Bulldgos with 13 and 11 assists, respectively to begin the year.

The Bulldogs have a plus-14 rebounding margin through the first two games, has made 15 more 3-pointers and 12 more free throws. Gonzaga is led by Head Coach Lisa Fortier, who has had 20-plus win seasons in seven of her first eight seasons leading the program.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST GONZAGA
Gonzaga leads the all-time series, 7-1 and has defeated the Cowgirls in each of the previous three seasons. Two of those three victories have come in Laramie. Wyoming's lone win in the series came in the opener, on the road in 1989.
