Swim & dive claims a couple victories at Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (10/22/22) – The University of Wyoming swimming & diving team scored a couple of wins Saturday at Colorado Mesa. The Cowgirls topped the Mavericks, 156-144, and the Cowboys topped the scoreboard 154.5-143.5 inside El Pomar Natatorium.

"Our men and women were tough today across the board," head coach Dave Denniston said. "The team's energy and excitement to race made it one of our most fun meets."

Wyoming's women's team won seven events. Of those seven events, the Cowgirls finished 1-2-3 in one race and took the top-two spots in five events.

Wyoming's men's team won eight events on the day. Of those eight victories, the Cowboys went 1-2-3 in a pair of events and finished 1-2 in a trio of races.

The Cowgirls went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard butterfly. Berkeley Christensen led the pack, clocking in at 2:12.51.

The Cowboys went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 500-yard freestyle. Grant Sloan spearheaded the effort in the 100 breast, clocking in at 56.87, while Charlie Clark topped the field in the 500 free, swimming a time of 4:40.65.

The Cowgirls went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle, as Mikayla Moore won both races. She recorded a time of 23.92 in the 50 and then went 52.85 in the 100.

The women claimed the top-two spots in the 100-yard butterfly, as Emily Burchett won with a time of 58.01. Wyoming also took the top-two spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as Maisyn Klimczak won, boasting a time of 10:26.95.

The Cowgirls capped their 1-2 finishes in the 3-meter event. Nettie Knapton led the way, compiling a score of 261.10.

Klimczak put an exclamation point on the victories for the women with her second win of the day. She touched first in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 5:06.64.

The Cowboys went 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, as Quinn Cynor led the way after registering a time of 1:40.62. Wyoming also went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle, as Gavin Smith won, logging a time of 45.86.

The Cowboys also had the top-two swimmers in the 200-yard breaststroke. John Wargin won the event, logging a time of 2:05.86.

Sloan won his second event of the day, besting the field in the 50-yard freestyle after swimming a 21.17. Clark claimed his second individual win, topping the field in the 1000-yard freestyle, boasting a time of 9:34.11.

Wyoming capped its day with a victory in the 800-yeard freestyle relay. The collection of Smith, Harry Tjaden, Clark and Cynor won with a time of 6:44.87.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls are back in the pool Oct. 29. They host Air Force at 1 p.m. inside Laramie High School.
