LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/14/22) – The month of October is not an easy one for the University of Wyoming women's swimming & diving team. Training ratchets up and on top of that the meet schedule kicks off, leaving the swimmers fatigued.

That's the large takeaway head coach Dave Denniston had from his team's first dual meet of the season Friday against New Mexico. He was pleased with how his Cowgirls persevered through their tiredness to log a very successful meet and a 203-147 victory.

"I think they did great," Denniston said. "I think what we saw through this week was finishing their races looked really, really strong, which will help us moving forward. Across the board, when we are coming down to the wall on that finish – and it's neck and neck – it's nice to see Cowgirls get their hand on the wall, and we saw that a lot in the last couple days."

Friday's meet was highlighted by a race that's not commonly swum at dual meets – the 400-yard individual medley. The Cowgirls claimed the top four slots.

Ellie Fritscher won the race with a time of 4:42.52. Kayla Cunningham took second, clocking in at 4:48.60, while Roxanna Ramirez and Sydney Metzler finished third and fourth with times of 4:49.18 and 4:49.70, respectively.

The Cowgirls also took 1-2-3 in the 200-yard backstroke, as Maisyn Klimczak led the way, posting a time of 2:07.89. Cunningham and Metzler rounded out the top three with times of 2:08.07 and 2:11.57, respectively.

Sydney McKenzie and Brooke Ford placed first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke. They registered times of 2:23.72 and 2:27.94.

Wyoming also took 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle. Carly Palmer and Berkeley Christensen finished with times of 1:55.66 and 1:57.47.

Emily Burchett and Sage Morton represented the final two victorious Cowgirls. Burchett claimed a victory in the 100-yard butterfly, logging a time of 58.21, while Morton took first in the 500-yard freestyle after recording a time of 5:11.77.

"Emily Burchett in the 100 fly, that was a great race," Denniston said. "Sydney McKenzie continues to have a great meet. I think the other one that really stood out was Carly Palmer in the 200 free. Those would be my top three, but there were a lot of other notable swims that happened."

Wyoming continues its season at Colorado Mesa on Oct. 22.
