LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/13/22) – The University of Wyoming women's swimming & diving team wrapped up Day 1 of its dual meet against New Mexico on Thursday at Corbett Pool. The Cowgirls lead the Lobos 79-66 with Day 2 upcoming Friday morning.

"We had a lot of great racing," head coach Dave Denniston said. "I think the details that we've been practicing so far have been shining through. The women are swimming great and have really great energy. I think there's a little bit of fatigue from tests and training that we are seeing, but they're fighting through it, and it has been a really fun meet so far."

Wyoming took 1-2-3 in a pair of races Thursday. They also took 1-2 in one event and added another victory.

The 100-yard backstroke featured the first Cowgirl top-three finish. Emily Giles won the race with a time of 58.94, while Sydney Metzler and Maisyn Klimczak took second and third with times of 59.43 and 59.50, respectively.

The 200-yard butterfly represented the other Cowgirl 1-2-3 finish. Berkeley Christensen claimed first, recording of a time of 2:12.59, and Roxy Ramirez and Hannah Giles placed second and third, logging times of 2:12.70 and 2:18.65, respectively.

Sydney McKenzie and Brynlee Busskohl touched first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke. McKenzie clocked in at 1:04.44 and Busskohl registered a time of 1:05.66.

Sage Morton rounded out the Cowgirl victors. She topped the field in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:54.93.

"Sage Morton's finish in the 1,000 was fun," Denniston said. "I think Emily Giles 100 backstroke, the adjustment from the relay to the individual in that was what allowed her to win. I think the big swimmer of today was Sydney McKenzie with her breaststroke as well as the IM. That was a lot of fun. I think one of the standouts of our newcomers was Berkely Christensen in the 200 fly. She finished that race great."

Racing tomorrow at Corbett Pool begins at 10 a.m.
