LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 7, 2021) – Fresh off their first round win at the Air Force Reserve Mountain West Tournament, the Wyoming Cowgirls now shift their focus to the quarterfinals against No. 2 seed UNLV Monday in a 6:30 p.m., MT contest.
All games at the Mountain West Tournament will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Keith Kelley on the call.
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
The seventh-seeded Cowgirls (11-9) opened the tournament with a 69-41 victory over No. 10 seed Utah State Sunday night. Wyoming shot a season-high 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the field in the win and held the Aggies to just 21.7 percent (13-for-60) shooting, a season-low for Cowgirl opponents this season.
Dagny Davidsdottir led the Cowgirls with a game-high 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting against Utah State. McKinley Bradshaw added 16 points off the bench in the win while Alba Sanchez Ramos and Quinn Weidemann added 13 and 12 points, respectively with Weidemann tying a career-high with six assists. Earlier in the day Sunday, Weidemann was named to the Mountain West All-Defensive Team voted on by the league's coaches. Jaye Johnson grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds against USU Sunday.
With the win, Wyoming has now defeated Utah State in three consecutive seasons at the conference tournament and has 12 victories all time at tourney.
SCOUTING UNLV
UNLV enters the tournament as one of the hottest teams in league, having won five-straight to move into the No. 2 seed. The Lady Rebels are led by 2021 All-Mountain West honoree Nia Johnson who is averaging 12.5 points per game this season. Desi-Rae Young, who was the league's Freshman of the Year, is second on the team in both scoring (12.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg). Young was joined on the All-Freshman team by Jade Thomas. Bailey Thomas, who was also honored as the league's Defensive Player of the Year led UNLV with 38 steals this season.
UNLV is averaging 70.7 points per game this year and is allowing opponents to score at just a 67.8 points per game clip. The Lady Rebels are out-rebounding their opponents by nearly five boards per game and is allowing opponents to shoot just 39.7 percent from the floor.
Lindy La Rocque, who is in her first season as the Head Coach of UNLV, was named the conference's Coach of the Year Sunday.
SERIES HISTORY
Wyoming holds the slimmest of margins in the all-time series, 26-25 and split the previous two meetings with the Lady Rebels earlier this season in December. UNLV took game one December 12, 54-46 with the Cowgirls winning game two Dec. 14, 67-62. This will be the third meeting between the two teams at the Mountain West Tournament, UW won 60-55 back in 2010 the last time the two met.
