LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of Wyoming Track and Field teams competed at the 2021 UNLV Spring Invitational at Myron Partridge Stadium on Friday and Saturday in what was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Cowboys and Cowgirls.

The Wyoming throwers had a big weekend. On Friday, Kirk Unland and Hap Frketich were up first in the men's hammer. The duo went one-three in the event with Unland taking first place with his mark of 60.59M. The Cowgirls followed things up with a couple of impressive performances from Mary Carbee and Anna Gillis

Carbee and Gillis both entered the UW record books with their throws. Carbee's mark of 58.74M was good for second place at the meet and 7th all-time at UW while Gillis' finished fourth in Las Vegas and now sits in 10th all-time at UW with a throw of 57.45.

More of the same on Saturday as Addison Henry took third place in the Shot Put with a throw of 14.35M. On the men's side of the Shot Put Colton Paller and Mikey DeRock went two-three for the Cowboys. Paller set an outdoor PR with a mark of 16.64M while DeRock set a PR with a throw of 16.21M. Paller wrapped up his competition by taking the first spot in the Discus with a mark of 51.62M.

"From the two freshmen, Mateya and Jordan, competing with veteran composure in their first-ever hammer throw competition, to the two ladies who put their names in the Wyoming record books, the Cowgirls came out swinging", said Assistant Coach Carrie Lane. "Beyond the hammer throw, we had solid performances across the board for both the men and women throwers. I'm happy to see lots of personal bests and top three performances from our crew. They definitely seized the long awaited opportunity."

Following in their teammates footsteps the Cowboys went one-two in the Long Jump, while the Cowgirls went two-three on the women's side of the event. William Nolan took first place with a mark of 7.53M while freshman Kareem Mersal went 7.48M for second place. Shayla Howell and Sadie McMullen went two-three on the women's side with solid performances. Howell went 6.04M for second and McMullen 6.00M for third.

Associate Head Coach Quincy Howe said 'Great start for the group as a whole, we haven't had outdoor competition in 21 months and it's just great to see everyone compete outdoors again'

A couple of more third place finishes for Wyoming on the track as Jasmyne Cooper ran 2:14.00 in the 800M and Cowboy Brandon McGuire posted a 55.17 in the 400M Hurdles.
