LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 23, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will host non-conference foe CSU Pueblo Wednesday night at 6:30. The February 24 contest will be the Cowgirls' first game since Feb. 13 against Utah State. It is the first-ever meeting between UW and the ThunderWolves.
Wyoming (10-9) is done with its Mountain West slate this season since the league's announcement that UW's series against New Mexico, originally scheduled for Feb. 17 and 19 will not be made up. The Cowgirls are 2-1 this season in non-conference games, including a 1-1 mark at home, with its win coming over Denver, 79-67, in the season opener.
The Cowgirls are coming off arguably their best offensive performance of the season in a 79-42 victory over Utah State. Wyoming hit 17 3-pointers in the victory, the third-most in a single game in program history. McKinley Bradshaw and Quinn Weidemann were deadeyes in the Feb. 13 win over the Aggies. The duo combined to shoot 16-fo-21 from the floor and 10-of-13 from 3-point range in the victory. Bradshaw scored a game-high 23 points off the bench while Weidemann tallied a season-best 21.
Over the last seven games, Alba Sanchez Ramos has crashed the glass at a high rate, averaging 9.1 rebounds per game over that stretch. Sanchez Ramos has reached double-digit rebounds in four of those games, including recording a career-high 13 boards in the Feb. 11 win over Utah State. Sanchez Ramos leads the Cowgirls averaging 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Wyoming has played some of its best basketball of the season over the last six games and is a perfect 4-0 at home. The Cowgirls are averaging 64.8 points per game over those six contests and holding opponents to just 52 points per. UW is shooting over 42 percent from the field overall and 35 percent from 3-point range during that span is and out-rebounding its opponents by nearly three rebounds per game. In the Cowgirls' previous 13 games prior, they averaged under 60 points per game and were allowing opponents to score nearly 63 per game. Wyoming also shot 39 percent from the floor, 31 percent from beyond-the-arc and was being out-rebounded by over four boards per game in its first 13 contests of the season.
The ThunderWolves enter Wednesday's game with a 3-13 mark, with all games coming in conference play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). CSU Pueblo is led by Sydni Williams' 12.8 points per game, while Williams' 6.6 rebounds per contest are second-best on the team. JaNaiya Davis also averages in double figures this season at 11.3 points per and is also averaging 6.6 rebounder per game. Davis' 89 assists (5.6 per), 48 steals and 19 blocked shots are all team highs.
CSU Pueblo enters the contest averaging nearly 61 points per game and is allowing opponents to score 65.6 per. The ThunderWolves are shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 27.2 percent from 3-point range. Tommie Johnson is in his second season as the head coach at CSU Pueblo after a long stint as the men's assistant coach.
Wednesday will be Senior Night for Wyoming as three Cowgirls, Emily Buchanan, Dagny Davidsdottir and Jaye Johnson will be honored before the game.
