Golden, CO. (Nov. 8, 2021) – The Wyoming Cowboy wrestling squad showcased their youth and depth on Sunday as 15 grapplers competed in the Mines Rookie Open and impressed at the event. All 15 wrestlers competed unattached in brackets that featured athletes with less than three seasons of experience.
Of the 15 Pokes the competed 13 finished the day as place winners and five wrapped up the day as champions of their respective weight classes.
At 133 pounds
Josh Kyle put on a clinic outscoring his first three opponents of the tournament 41-4. In the finals Kyle kept his offense rolling and defeated Malachi Contreras (MINES) 10-6 to finish the day as the 133-pound champion.
Darren Green would battle his way to a first-place finish at the 141-pound weight class going 4-0 on the day which was highlighted by an overtime victory over Northern Colorado's Benji Alanis.
The 165-pound weight class was controlled by the unattached athletes from Wyoming as top three spots all went to Cowboys.
Cooper Voorhees and
Kevin Anderson met each other in the finals where Voorhees would grind out a 9-5 win.
Hayden Lieb fought his way through the consolation bracket and took third after defeating Air Force's Ty Ryan with a 12-0 victory.
The next Cowboy champion came in the 184-pound weight class as true freshman
Quayin Short fought his way to the title. Short went 4-0 on the day highlighted by a gritty finals performance that saw him defeat Air Force's Andrew Wenzel, 2-0.
The great day for the Cowboys was capped off by
Bradley Moore in the 285-pound bracket. Moore pinned his way to the finals and then showcased his grit and determination in an overtime win over Anthony Atria (MINES).
Warren Carr and
Gage Hockett also made the finals and both finished second at 149 and 174 pounds respectively.
The Cowboys will officially begin their season on Nov. 27 when they host the Cowboy Open in Laramie.
