LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/15/21) – The University of Wyoming swimming & diving team is just about to wrap up its fall schedule. But before that happens, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will embark on one of their busiest weeks of the season.
UW travels to the Missouri Invitational, beginning Wednesday and concluding Friday. The Corbett Invitational – which will be held at Laramie High School – starts Saturday and ends Sunday.
With a flurry of meets in a short period of time, head coach
Dave Denniston is hoping to see some quick times turned in by his team.
"I want a lot of the athletes – with the training we've put in, with the little bit of rest we've had, with a fast suit – to go a lifetime-best time in at least one event," Denniston said. "If they can do that, that'd be great."
The Missouri Invitational also affords Denniston and his staff the opportunity to piece together relays and focus in on which student-athletes should be swimming what events come Mountain West Conference championship time.
"It really does give us a good vision of what our lineup will be like through the spring season," Denniston said. "We've got a good bit of racing ahead of us. Conference is the big one everyone looks forward to, and I'm looking forward to putting together a good lineup that'll turn some heads and make some noise."
Competition in Columbia – held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center – begins Wednesday during the day with preliminary races. Finals are held in the evening each of the three days. A total of 36 student-athletes will compete in Missouri.
Very shortly after, Wyoming returns to Laramie to host the annual Corbett Invitational. That meet begins Saturday at 4 p.m. and finishes Sunday at 11 a.m. at Laramie High School.
This meet is a chance for the entire roster to chase pool records and showcase fast times before a month-and-a-half layoff from competition.
"The swimmers love going fast times and best times, and it's an opportunity for some to do something we haven't seen all season," Denniston said. "There are a lot of young swimmers who train so hard but don't always get an opportunity to show what they're capable of. This will be an opportunity to show us something we haven't seen."
As mentioned, Wyoming will take a break from competition until the New Year. Both squads host Denver on Jan. 8 at Laramie High School.
