Freshman
Gage Hockett was a four-time state placer and two time Oklahoma state champion, accumulating 145 victories during his high school career. He also excelled in the classroom as a four-year honor roll member.
How has practice and training differed from high school to college?
At the college level practice is a lot more structured and broken down into specific techniques the coaches feel their wrestlers should focus on.
What are you most looking forward to going into your fist season at UW?
Going into my first season I'm mostly looking forward to competing with my teammates in the practice room and applying the new skills I learn from them on the competition mats.
What is one thing you learned in your high school career that will help you to compete at the college level?
One thing I learned in high school that will help me on the college level is knowing how to make changes to my wrestling in the middle of a match.
What is your favorite memory from your high school career?
My favorite memory from high school wrestling is when my team got second at duel state.
Do your model style after any other wrestlers?
I like to think I model my wrestling style after a former Oklahoma state university wrestler named Newly McSpadden!
What's the biggest goal you have set for yourself in your first year at UW?
The biggest goal I have set for myself during my first year at UW is to be open to new experiences.
What motivated you the most during your final two seasons in high school as you became a two-time state champion?
One of the things that motivated me most during my high school career to be a 2x state champ was knowing how much people expected of me and not wanting to let those people down.
As a four-time honor roll member in high school, have you set high goals for your academic career at UW as well?
I have set high goals for myself academically at UW and feel the study hall at the university is a great way to keep me on task.
Why did you decide to come to UW?
I decided to attend UW because I felt I would fit in here in Wyoming and enjoy the outdoors. I also felt I could become the best version of myself under the coaching staff.
Coming from Oklahoma, does the possibility of getting to compete against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State excite/motivate you at all?
The idea of competing against schools from my home state definitely motivates me. I have some unfinished business with a couple of guys attending the schools back in Oklahoma and feel it's time to show them what I'm capable of on the mat.
