Laramie, Wyo. (Nov. 24, 2020) -- University of Wyoming Athletics' teams have once again posted outstanding Graduation Success Rates (GSRs) in the most recent data released by the NCAA. All of Wyoming's Athletics' teams either exceeded the national average GSR for their sport or posted a 90 percent or higher graduation rate for the most recent graduation period measured by the NCAA.
The data released by the NCAA reflected the percentage of NCAA Division I student-athletes who started college in 2013 and went on to earn degrees. The combined overall GSR for all Division I student-athletes reached 90 percent in the most recent data. That is the highest graduation rate ever and an increase of 1 percent over the rate for students who entered college in 2012.
Of Wyoming's teams, 10 of 13 UW teams matched or exceeded the national NCAA Division I Graduation Success Rate for their sport. Those 10 teams included: men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country and track and field, women's cross country and track and field, football, men's golf, men's swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
The other three UW teams (women's golf, soccer and women's swimming and diving) all achieved GSRs of 90 percent or higher and the only reason they didn't match or exceed the national average for their sports was because of the exceptionally high national graduation rate for each of their sports.
Overall combining all sports, 91 percent of University of Wyoming student-athletes who began college in 2013 graduated.
A note on the data, while Wyoming Athletics offers 17 sports, for the purposes of the NCAA GSR data the NCAA combines men's cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field into one sport and also combines women's cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field into one sport.
"Ultimately, the goal of all of our student-athletes should be to earn a degree from the University of Wyoming," said
Tom Burman, UW Director of Athletics. "These most recent graduation rates are exciting to see as they indicate that 91 percent of our student-athletes are graduating and in most cases are graduating at rates higher than their peers around the country.
"To know that the young men and women who come into our program are leaving here with their college degrees is something they and their families should be extremely proud of. I know all of our coaches and staff are proud of them for their hard work and dedication."
