The time had come. Summer had begun to wind down, and that meant it was time for something even more exciting – the fall 2020 Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer season.
Sun beating down on our faces, cleats squishing in the grass from an early morning dew, blood coursing through our veins obeying our thoughts of 'be better'; we were ready to play soccer like no one had ever seen before.
The fall 2019 season, 7-7-5 overall record, remained a constant reminder of what we wanted to prove to our Wyoming fans, our coaches, our opponents, and more important than anyone else, ourselves. Every play we could feel the intensity and motivation propelling our team forward into a season that was ours for the taking then we heard the news.
On August 10, 2020, Athletics Director
Tom Burman informed our women's soccer team that the season would be postponed to the spring. There was nothing, not a word. Silence had never been so loud.
Sophomore defender
Keelie Wortmann expressed her feelings about the news.
"Once it came out the Mountain West season being postponed to the spring, I was devastated. I was heartbroken for our seniors and for this University due to their widened efforts to let their student-athletes play in the Fall."
Wortmann wasn't alone when it came to disappointment about the postponed season. Junior forward
Amber Vokoun said, "I was extremely disheartened because I thought if we had played, our team would have been extremely competitive in conference. It didn't feel like everything over the summer had been a waste, but it did feel like a huge drop in momentum, mentally."
The two student-athletes are joined by the rest of the team in their temporary shift in momentum. However, your Cowgirls know how to get back in the saddle and ride a different terrain!
"Relationships on a soccer team is one of the most important factors towards having a successful season. Now that there is more time to get closer with my teammates before our season, everyone would be more willing to make necessary sacrifices for those around them," Wortmann added. "Even though our season has been pushed back, I will continue to keep my head down, push through the physical and mental battles and be ready for the starting whistle when it comes."
While the beginning of the fall season wasn't like anything any of us expected, there is a glimmer of determination shining through the team. While it may be longer than we anticipated, the Cowgirls will be back, and the comeback will be unlike any other before.
