LARAMIE, Wyo. (January 13, 2020) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (7-8, 3-3 MW) continues Mountain West play by hosting Nevada (8-8, 1-4 MW) on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (MT) in the Arena-Auditorium. The Cowgirls are looking to snap a three-game losing streak and stay in the top half of the Mountain West standings.
The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network, and can be heard across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Reece Monaco on the call.
A LOOK AT THE WYOMING COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls are 7-8 overall with a 3-3 mark in the Mountain West following a 53-65 road loss against UNLV. Sophomore
Tereza Vitulova leads Wyoming with averages of 14.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Vitulova is also converting 52.3 percent of her shots, which is second in the Mountain West. Sophomore
Quinn Weidemann averages 9.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game and has made a team-leading 26 threes this season. Senior
Taylor Rusk averages 8.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Sophomores
Karla Erjavec and
Alba Sanchez Ramos average 7.2 and 7.1 points per game, respectively, while Erjavec averages a team-best 3.9 assists per game and Sanchez Ramos collects 5.0 rebounds per contest.
The Cowgirls are shooting 40.6 percent (351-865) from the field, 35.6 percent (111-312) from three and 71.2 percent (111-156) from three free throw line to average 61.6 points per game. Wyoming averages 12.6 assists and 12.6 turnovers per game. Wyoming opponents are shooting 38.9 percent (331-851) from the field, 30.4 percent (69-227) from three and 72.6 percent (146-201) from the free throw line to average 58.5 points per game. Opponents average 10.3 assists and 12.1 turnovers per game.
Head coach
Gerald Mattinson is in his first year as head coach of the Cowgirls and owns a 7-8 record. He spent the previous 16 seasons on the Wyoming bench as an assistant and associate head coach.
SCOUTING NEVADA
The Wolf Pack are 8-8 this season and 1-4 in the Mountain West following a 69-60 win over Utah State at home. Imani Lacy leads Nevada in scoring at 12.0 points per game while pulling down 5.0 rebounds per contest. Essence Booker averages 11.1 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, while Marguerite Effa rounds out Nevada's double-digit scores with 10.1 points and a team-high 6.2 rebounds per game. Jená Williams leads the Wolf Pack offense with 2.3 assists per game. Defensively, Lacy has a team-high 19 blocks on the season, while Booker leads the way with 20 steals.
The Wolf Pack are shooting 40.7 percent (410-1,007) from the field, 30.0 percent (78-260) from three and 68.9 percent (175-254) from the free throw line to average 67.1 points per game. Nevada averages 13.8 assists and 15.3 turnovers per contest. Nevada foes are shooting 41.6 percent (403-968) from the field, 28.0 percent (71-254) from three and 68.8 percent (150-218) from the free throw line to average 64.2 points per game. Wolf Pack foes average 12.4 assists and 17.3 turnovers per game.
Head coach Amanda Levens is in her third season at the helm of the Nevada Wolf Pack, and she has a record of 39-44 during her time in Reno. Overall, she has spent seven season as a head coach and has a record of 81-120.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST NEVADA
The Cowgirls own the series lead against the Wolf Pack, 18-7, and have won seven of the last nine contests between the two teams. Wyoming has won the last eight matchups in the Arena-Auditorium, dating back to 2000. Overall, the Cowgirls are 10-1 against the Wolf Pack here at 7,220 feet, most recently picking up a 66-60 win in 2018. There have only been five instances of either team scoring at least 70 points since Nevada joined the Mountain West in 2012-13.
