LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 6, 2019) – The Wyoming women's soccer team (1-1-2 overall) suffered its first defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss against the Baylor Bears (3-0-1 overall) on Friday night in Laramie.
 
Baylor came out aggressive to begin the game and really pushed the pace on its side of the field. They would put together a string of shots early which came up empty. In the sixth minute, a ball around the 18 yard line was put in the left corner by Eva Mitchell to make it 1-0 in favor of the Bears. Wyoming got its first opportunity with 10:31 on the clock as redshirt freshman Jamie Tatum had a shot go high. Baylor continued the solid play and had eight shots over the next 25 minutes, three of them on goal. Towards the end of the half, the Cowgirls had three good chances. Sophomore Savannah Warner and freshman Keelie Wortmann had looks but were scooped up by Jennifer Wandt. Senior Summer Taube had her shot hit the post, but UW was called offside. The two teams would head in to the lockerroom with the Bears up 1-0.
 
It was tough going in the second half for the Cowgirls to get any momentum, while Baylor continued its strong play. The Bears would have seven shots in the first 22 minutes of the period with three of them on goal. Wyoming would only have one look at the net in the 83^rd minute by Tatum whose shot went wide. Late in the period, Baylor gave themselves an insurance goal as Camryn Wendlandt pushed it in the left side of the net past sophomore Riley Furbush to make it 2-0 with 87:22 on the clock. Unfortunately, the clock would be the enemy for the Cowgirls as they would fall 2-0
 
"It was frustrating to give up a goal that early in a game. I felt we were a little tentative, nervous playing a team that has a great reputation and has been very good over the last few years," head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "After we gave up the goal, we settled down, played really well and actually created more chances. As the game got later, we started to chase more from behind, needed to throw some numbers forward and get that tying goal. A good team will make you pay for that and for us I think we need to start the game better. The chances we had in the first half, had a couple of fantastic looks and we needed to be more clinical with our finishes. Our effort was there for 90 minutes, but our execution needs to be cleaner when you play a team of this caliber."
 
Tatum finished the match with a team-high three shots in her 72 minutes of action. Warner and Wortmann each had one shot on goal while playing 90 minutes. Sophomores Hannah Lee and Furbush split time in goal recording a combined eight saves.   
 
Wyoming will return to action on Sunday against the Idaho State Bengals. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
