OMAHA, Neb. (Sept. 21, 2019) – The Wyoming volleyball team dropped its final non-conference tune-up match of the season Saturday afternoon as the Cowgirls were downed in three sets by 15th-ranked Creighton. Set scores went 25-11, 25-23 and 25-19.
Tara Traphagan led the Cowgirls (5-6) with 11 kills in the loss and hit .500 while Jackie McBride chipped in with six and added a team-high four blocking assists. Both McBride and Traphagan were named to the all-classic team following the match.
Madi Fields and Erika Jones both led Wyoming with 11 digs on the day while Mackenzie Coates added eight. Coates also led the team with 20 assists.
The Bluejays tallied a .203 hitting percentage in the contest while holding the Pokes to just a .055 clip. CU also had a 14-8 edge in blocks and had two more service aces than Wyoming (6-4).
After dropping the first set, the Cowgirls' rally in set two came up short. Trailing 23-17 in the second, Wyoming would score six of the next seven points to cut the deficit down to just 24-23, before a Creighton block ended the rally to end the set. In the third, the Pokes fell behind early 10-3, before slowly chipping away to trail by just one, 16-15. After the two teams traded points to make it 19-18, the Bluejays took command scored six of the final seven points to take the match.
Wyoming now shifts its focus to Mountain West play as the Cowgirls open league play at home Sept. 26 as UNLV comes to the UniWyo Sports Complex for a 6:30 p.m., contest.
