ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (September 10, 2019) – Current Cowgirl basketball head coach Gerald Mattinson and former Cowgirl head coach Joe Legerski were enshrined into the Rock Springs High School Hall of Fame over the weekend. The duo spent 16 years coaching together at Wyoming.

Mattinson was inducted into the RSHS Hall of Fame as an athlete. During his four years at RHSH, he earned three letters in both football and basketball. He earned all-state in 1975 in football as a tight end and in 1976 as a defensive tackle. In basketball, he was all-region and all-state in 1976, and was all-region and all-state in 1977 while earning high school All-America honors and playing in the Wyoming-Montana All-Star Game. As a senior in 1977, Mattinson was awarded the Milward Simpson Award as the outstanding high school athlete in Wyoming.

He went on to play basketball at Casper College and Weber State before entering the coaching world. He began his career coaching the RSHS boys basketball team, before moving on to Western Wyoming Community College. In 2003, he started his stint coaching at Wyoming as an assistant on Legerski's staff. Mattinson earned the title of Associate Head Coach in 2006, and following Legerski's retirement this summer, was named the head coach of Cowgirl basketball.

Legerski entered the RSHS Hall of Fame as a distinguished alumni, as he is the Cowgirl basketball program record holder for coaching wins with 314. He won three Coach of the Year honors in the Mountain West, most recently following the 2017-18 season. His teams posted 10 separate 20-win seasons, including last year's 25-9 team that was the first ever to play in the Mountain West Championship game. Most notably, Legerski and the Cowgirls won the 2007 Women's National Invitation Tournament, defeating Wisconsin in a sold-out Arena-Auditorium in the tournament's finale. Overall, his teams have competed in the postseason nine times. Legerski's teams also excelled off the court, as he has coached 74 academic all-MW athletes and 46 MW scholar-athletes.

At RSHS, Legerski earned three letters in football and three in basketball. He was named to the all-region and all-state basketball teams  as a senior in 1975, while being added to the AP All-State team. Following his high school career, Legerski attended the University of Wyoming. He then coached the Rock Springs High School boys team for five years, girls coach for three years, and women's coach at Western Wyoming CC for one season. He then joined the Wyoming staff as an assistant for five years before joining the Utah staff for 13 seasons. Following his stint on the Utes' staff, Legerski was named the head coach of the Cowgirls in 2003.
