LARAMIE, Wyo. (August 23, 2019) – The Cowgirl volleyball team had their first chance to play in front of Wyoming fans this season, competing in the annual Brown and Gold Scrimmage on Friday Night. The two teams split four sets before signing autographs for fans.

"I thought a few of our newcomers played well," said head coach Chad Callihan. "It's always nice for them to get a little bit of experience. I thought Carlie Fikse, who redshirted last year and has been in the gym, this was her first chance to get going here, and I thought she did some nice things. I was pleased with our setting and ball control. I think that's been a strength throughout the preseason."

The Gold team struck first, claiming the opening set 25-18. However, the Brown squad bounced back convincingly and took the next two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-14. Gold responded and topped the Brown side in the fourth set, 25-20, and the Cowgirls ended the scrimmage.

"There's still a lot of little things to fix," Callihan said. "It'll be nice to watch the film with this group next week and try to tweak some of those things before Colorado. But I'm pretty encouraged with what we did with the first contact."

Wyoming takes on Nebraska-Kearney tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. in Cheyenne. The match will be held at Cheyenne East High School, and admission to the event is $10. There will be a skills clinic put on by the team from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cheyenne East that costs $10 and includes free admission to the night's match. Fans are also encouraged to attend the tailgate in the Cheyenne East parking lot starting at 5 p.m. The tailgate is free and includes complimentary pizza and drinks while supplies last.

The Cowgirls open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, when they travel to Boulder, Colo., to face Colorado at 6 p.m. in the Buffs Invitational. The second game of that tournament is Saturday, Aug. 31, at Noon against Santa Barbara.

The Cowgirls host LIU Brooklyn on Monday, Sept. 2, at 6:30 p.m. for their regular season home opener in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Season tickets are available for Cowgirl volleyball, starting at $65 for public general admission and $35 for children between the ages of 3-12.
