Clara Tapia has been named to the Academic All-District VII First Team, it was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. This is the second year in a row earning the award for the Barcelona, Spain, native. She is the first Cowgirl to earn multiple first-team academic all-district honors.
In the classroom, Tapia holds a 4.0 GPA in molecular biology and chemistry. She is a two-time academic all-Mountain West selection, and twice has been named a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. After earning first-team academic all-district last season, Tapia went on to earn third-team academic All-America honors.
Tapia has started every game for the Cowgirls this season and in her career. This season she is averaging 4.0 points and 3.1 assists per game while playing in 26.2 minutes each contest. She currently ranks 29
th in the NCAA with a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio, and has led the Cowgirls in assists seven times this season. Tapia currently ranks seventh all-time at Wyoming with 359 assists. In one of Wyoming's toughest conference games, she scored a season-high nine points to help end Boise State's 10-game winning streak on Jan. 26.
The Academic All-District ® teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The University Division team includes NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Tapia and the Cowgirls are riding an eight-game winning streak and host Colorado State on Saturday, Feb. 23. That game tips off at 2 p.m. (MT), and is the Cowgirls' annual "Bounce Cancer" game. Fans can purchase their "Bounce Cancer" shirts before the game for $15.
