Wyoming Track And Field Announces Seven Additions to the 2019-20 Signing Class

LARAMIE,Wyo. (February 20, 2019) – Wyoming track and field head coach Bryan Berryhill announced Wednesday the addition of seven student-athletes to the 2019-20 signing class. The signees will add talent to different event groups, and the five Cowboys and two Cowgirls will join the squad this fall.
 
"When you look at this recruiting class so far, we were trying to hit all the event areas, and we did that," said Wyoming head coach Bryan Berryhill. "I think the overall quality of this recruiting class is very high, and we're looking to add a few more to it here in the near future."
 
Below is information on the seven signees: Hunter Brown, Seth Bruxvoort, Logan DeRock, Mateya Mobley, Josh Rodgers, Asefa Wetzel and Connor Zydek.
 
Hunter Brown
Son of Tim and Krista Brown… Competed in both track & field and football at Natrona County High School in Casper… In track & field, is a three-time long jump state champion, winning the event during outdoor as a sophomore and both indoor and outdoor as a junior in 2018… Also won state in the triple jump in 2017, and was all-state in the triple jump during the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2018… Was a team captain as a junior… Placed eighth in the long jump at the Outdoor Nationals in 2018… Has personal best marks of 23 feet, 3.5 inches in the long jump, 46 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump and six feet, six inches in the high jump, all of which are school records… Was a part of NCHS's state championship football team in 2018 as a senior… In the classroom, has been a member of the honor roll his entire high school career and is a member of the student council.
 
"He's a multi-event athlete," said UW jumps coach Quincy Howe. "His primary events will be the horizontal jumps, but he's also a very good high jumper and should help us on relays as well. He fills a lot of holes and spots that we can utilize on the team. We're really excited to have him next year."
 
Seth Bruxvoort
Son of Russ and Kerstin Bruxvoort… Competed in cross country, track & field and basketball at Heritage Christian Academy in Colorado… In cross country, was the class 2A state champion as a senior to help guide Heritage Christian to the team state title… Earned all-state honors as a senior in 2018, all-conference honors in 2017 and 2018 and all-region honors all four years of his high school career… In the classroom, is a member of the National Honor Society and served as the student council vice president in 2017-18.
 
"A talented multi-sport athlete, Seth is both a track and cross country state champion as well as a starting guard for a state ranked basketball team," said UW men's distance coach Scott Dahlberg. "He has shown great drive and self-discipline through his high school career being successful in many areas."
 
Logan DeRock
Daughter of Christine DeRock… Competed in track & field, volleyball and lacrosse at Roosevelt High School in Colorado… In track & field, was the 2018 4A state and conference champion in the shot put and discus with school record throws… For her efforts, was named the Tribune Best Preps Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2018… Was all-conference in both shot put and discus in 2018 and 2017, and was named all-state in 2018… Earned honorable mention all-conference honors in the 4x100m relay (2018), shot put (2016) and sprint medley (2017) during her career… In volleyball, earned all-state honorable mention honors in 2019 and all-conference honorable mention honors in 2017… In lacrosse, was named all-conference in 2017… In the classroom, was a four-year member of the academic honor roll and earned four academic all-state honors during her career… Was the secretary for the National Honor Society.
 
"I watched Logan perform in track and in volleyball last year, and she has a commanding presence when she competes," said UW throws coach Carrie Lane. "Her confidence and athleticism will take her far as she becomes a full-time thrower. I'm excited about the versatility that she will bring, as she has in interest in learning both javelin and hammer next year for the Pokes."
 
Mateya Mobley
Daughter of Tracy and Tammy Mobley… Competed in track & field, volleyball and basketball at Rigby High School in Idaho… Won the 2018 Idaho State 5A shot put title with the best throw in the state during 2018… Threw a personal-best distance in the discus as a junior last season… In volleyball, was named all-state in 2018 as a senior.
 
"Mateya has a very high ceiling for her track & field career," said UW throws coach Carrie Lane. "Like Logan (DeRock), she is a successful three-sport athlete who has never focused solely on track & field. When she trains more specifically for the throws next year as a Cowgirl, her leadership and athleticism across many sports will transfer well. She will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future."
 
Josh Rodgers
Son of Douglas and Christine Rodgers… Competed in cross country and track & field at Geneva High School in Illinois from 2015-18 and in both sports at Cherokee Trail High School in Colorado this season… In cross country, earned all-state honors in the three mile race with a school record time of 14:36.6… Was voted the team MVP in 2017… Was the conference, regional and sectional champion in 2017, and added a conference title in 2016… Earned all-region and all-section honors in 2016… In track & field, was the indoor conference champion and the outdoor county and conference champion in the 3,200m race as a sophomore, and qualified for state in that distance as a freshman and sophomore… Was named all-conference in the 1,600m race as a sophomore and freshman… Has personal bests of 9:21.94 in the 3,2000m race and 4:24.36 in the 1,600m race from his sophomore season.
 
"Josh has really impressed me with a great deal of resilience and mental toughness that will translate well to the college setting," said UW men's distance coach Scott Dahlberg. "He has a lot of tools both physically and mentally that will represent the Brown and Gold well."
 
Asefa Wetzel
Son of Joseph and Christina Wetzel… Competed in cross country and track & field for Star Valley High School in Afton… In cross country, was a member of the 2015, 2016 and 2017 state championship teams, as well as winning the 2017 state individual title and regional individual title… Earned all-conference honors all four years of high school competition… In track & field, was a member of the 2016 and 2017 state championship teams… Was the 2017 3,200m state indoor champion, as well as the 2017 outdoor 1,600m and 3,200m state champion… Has been named all-conference during the indoor seasons all three years of competition… Qualified for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 New Balance Indoor Nationals… Runner up in the 1,600m at the 2018 Simplot Games… Was the 2018 UHSTCA 1,600m champion and 3,200m runner up… Qualified for 2016 and 2017 Aracadia…. Was the 2017 outdoor state champion in the 1,600m and 3,200m races… Has been named all-conference in all three outdoor seasons of competition… Was named the 2017 MVP and the 2015 Rookie of the Year… Has personal bests of 4:16 in the 1,600m, 9:23 in the 3,200m and 1:55 in the 800m… In the classroom, is a member of the National Honor Society.
 
"Asefa is a four-time and counting Wyoming state champion between cross country and track for the successful Star Valley High School Program," said UW men's distance coach Scott Dahlberg. "He's an outstanding competitor and brings a very impressive work ethic and hunger for improvement. He will contribute to the team in many ways."
 
Connor Zydek
Son of Michael and Christine Zydek… competed in cross country and track & field at Wheaton North High School in Illinois… In cross country, was an all-conference honoree in both 2017 and 2018… Had career best times in the three mile race of 15:04.3 and five kilometer race 15:45.7… In track and field, was named all-conference in the 3,200m in 2018, posting a career best time of 9:22.77 to win the sectional race… In the classroom, is a member of the Gold Honor Roll and has earned academic all-conference honors every semester he competed in a varsity sport… Is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Honor Society.
 
"In addition to being a great student and athlete, Connor brings a tremendous passion to be a Cowboy," said UW men's distance coach Scott Dahlberg. "He's had a very successful prep career and will continue to see success as he enters his collegiate career."
