LARAMIE, Wyo. (February 14, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirls (15-5, 8-3 MW) will put their six-game winning streak on the line when they travel to Reno to face Nevada (8-14, 4-7) on Saturday, Feb. 16, with a 3 p.m. (MT) tip-off. This will be the only regular season meeting between the two teams this year.
The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and on Stadium, and can be heard across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Reece Monaco on play-by-play and Wyoming Hall of Famer Margie McDonald with color commentary.
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls are 15-5 this season and 8-3 in the Mountain West coming off a 53-35 home win over Utah State, pushing their winning streak to six games. The Cowgirls are led offensively by senior forward
Marta Gomez who averages 15.6 points per game while adding 4.5 rebounds per contest. Senior forward
Bailee Cotton averages nearly a double-double with 11.3 points per contest and pulling down a team best 8.8 rebounds per game.
Cotton has also taken a team-leading 14 charges this season. Junior
Taylor Rusk is scoring 10.0 points per contest while adding 70 assists and only 19 turnovers, the fifth best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country. Freshman guard
Karla Erjavec leads the team in the assist department with 79 on the year. Defensively,
Erjavec has recorded 24 steals this season, while
Cotton has 18 blocks.
Offensively, the Cowgirls are shooting at a 46.5 percent (520-of-1,118) clip from the field while shooting 41.6 percent (158-of-380) from three and 75.1 percent (214-of-285) from the free throw line to average 70.6 points per game. The Cowgirls average 16.3 assists and just 11.4 turnovers per game. Opponents are shooting 41.4 percent (446-of-1,076) from the field, 34.1 percent (98-of-296) from three and 70.5 percent (167-of-237) from the free throw line to average 57.8 points per game. Cowgirl foes average 9.5 assists and 14.7 turnovers per game.
Head coach
Joe Legerski is in his 16th year at the helm of the Cowgirls, and he has compiled a 304-182 record as Wyoming's head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history.
SCOUTING NEVADA
The Wolf Pack are 8-14 on the year with a 4-7 ledger in Mountain West play following a 74-85 loss on the road against New Mexico last weekend. They are led offensively by Jade Redmon's 14.7 points and 2.3 assists per game. Terae Briggs adds 14.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 0.9 blocks per game, leading the team in the three defensive stats. Camariah Kings scores 8.0 points per contest, and is second on the team with 1.8 assists per game. Nevada boasts eight players with double-digit steals on the year.
Offensively, the Wolf Pack shoot 39.7 percent (536-of-1,351) from the field, 28.3 percent (97-of-343) from three and 70.3 percent (277-of-394) from the free throw line to average 65.7 points per game. Nevada averages 11.3 assists and 16.8 turnovers per contest. Opponents are shooting 44.2 percent (587-of-1,327) from the field, 32.7 percent (126-of-385) from three and 66.6 percent (235-of-353) from the free throw line to average 69.8 points per game. Wolf Pack foes average 14.1 assists and 17.7 turnovers per contest.
Head coach Amanda Levens is 27-31 in two years at Nevada, and owns a 69-107 career record in six seasons as a head coach.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST NEVADA
The Cowgirls own the series lead against the Wolf Pack, 17-7, and have won six of the last eight contests between the two teams. Wyoming has won the last two games in Reno, but lost the last game played in the state of Nevada, a 63-67 decision in Las Vegas during the 2018 Mountain West Tournament. The Cowgirls have never won three-consecutive true road games in the series. In fact, the current two-game winning streak is the only set of back-to-back wins in Reno for the Cowgirls.
