BOULDER, Colo. (February 1, 2019) – Senior
Michael Downey ran the fifth-fastest mile in program history and freshman
Aumni Ashby won the triple jump to highlight day one at the Colorado Invitational.
Downey entered the seeded mile race as the No. 6 seed, but finished fourth in an altitude-adjusted time of 4:05.64. That time is a personal best and the fifth-fastest in program history. It's also the fastest mile since Nick Theil ran a 4:02.71 in 1996. Downey finished first among Division I competitors, as well.
"This race was a great setup with some of the best milers in the region," said men's distance coach
Scott Dahlberg. "Downey took advantage of the opportunity and competed really well."
Freshman
Aumni Ashby picked up the first triple jump win of her young career, outclassing the field with a leap of 39 feet, 5.25 inches on her third jump of the day. Ashby is one of three Cowgirls ever to have cleared 40 feet in the event, as she opened the season going 40-10.25 at the Power Meet for the second-best jump in school history.
In the high jump,
Anissa Warner took sixth by clearing a season-best height of 5-1.25.
Anna Gillis placed 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 49-1.5.
Cowboy freshman
Reece Shannon bounced back from three fouls in the long jump to place second in the triple jump with a career-best mark of 45-5.25. That jump was his final attempt, and it moved him from third to second.
Wyoming will be back in action tomorrow for the conclusion of the Colorado Open. Tomorrow will feature the remaining track events as well as the men's and women's shot put.
