GREELEY, Colo. (Nov. 10, 2019) – Chase Zollmann at 141 pounds and Stephen Buchanan at 197, both took home individual titles Saturday at the Northern Colorado Open. Both wrestlers went 4-0 on the day to lead the Wyoming wrestling team. It was the second title of the young season for Buchanan, who also claimed the Amateur Bracket title at last week's Cowboys Open.
Buchanan was very impressive in his wins, picking up a 20-0 technical fall of Air Force's Cole Phelps in his quarterfinal match, and pinning Gavin Peitzmeier of Chadron State in the semis. Buchanan opened the tournament with a 9-3 decision of Colorado Mesa's Kash Anderson and won 12-5 in the championship match against Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado.
Zollmann wrestled his way to victory allowing just one point on the day. He opened his tournament with a fall of Rush Fannon of Colby before picking up back-to-back decisions, 7-1 of UNC's Ezekial Alirez and 3-0 over Josh Saunders. In his finals bout, Zollmann earned an impressive major decision, 8-0, over Brody Lamb of Northern Colorado.
Five Cowboys took second at the open. Jacob Greenwood (149), Logan Jensen (157), Cole Moody (165), Casey Randles (174) and Terren Swartz (HWT). All five went 3-1 on the day before being bested in the finals. Terren Swartz had the most active day of the group, opening his tournament with a pin of Wyatt Hendrickson. Then, winning by tech fall, 19-4 in the second round before taking a 4-2, sudden victory win over UNC's Dalton Robertson in the semifinals.
The Pokes return to action now Saturday, Nov. 16 for their first dual and Big 12 action of the season as UW travels to face Air Force in a 7 p.m., matchup at the USAFA.
