LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 24, 2019) – The Wyoming volleyball team extended its season-high winning streak to six consecutive matches Thursday night as the Cowgirls rolled past Nevada in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-13.
Wyoming (13-7, 8-1 MW) hit .333 as a team in the victory while holding Nevada (14-7, 4-5 MW) to just a .070 clip as a squad. The Cowgirls rarely trailed at all on the evening, just trailing once in the first set, the first point of the match, at 4-3 in the second and didn't trail at all in the third set.
"I thought we played really well tonight," said head coach Chad Callihan.
"It was nice to see us continue off of our good performance from Saturday. We didn't want that to just be a one-time thing. It was nice to see us compete well again against a good Nevada team."
The Cowgirls' defense was on point Thursday as they tallied nine total blocks in the three sets. Jackie McBride led the way with five block assists while Tara Traphagan and Faith Waitsman added four and three, respectively. Also a big boost was the back row play of Madi Fields, who notched 22 digs in the sweep. Fields was just four digs shy of tying the program record for most digs in a three-set match.
"We were definitely aware of Nevada's outside hitters," said Callihan. "Coming into tonight they were one of two teams in the conference that has two players in the top 10 in the league in kills this season. We tried to change where we start our defense and make a couple of subtle changes. The kids just did a real nice job of executing. I'm really pleased."
Offensively, the Cowgirls were no slouch either as McBride led the way with 14 kills while hitting an impressive .591 on the night. Kc McMahon added 11 kills of her own while Halie McArdle chipped in with six. Waitsman had five kills on just eight swings.
Mackenzie Coates paced the offense to that .333 clip by tallying a match-best 31 assists in the sweep while Fields chipped in with five.
McArdle led the way with a pair of aces on the night while Fields had another. Wyoming also had just four service errors while the Wolfpack had five and just a pair of aces.
Wyoming looks to continue its run now Saturday as San Jose State comes to town for a 6:30 p.m., contest.
