LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 22, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team looks to continue its hot streak as the Cowgirls put their five-match winning streak on the line this weekend as they host a pair of matches at the UniWyo Sports Complex as Nevada and San Jose State come to town.
Both matches this weekend start at 6:30 p.m., with Nevada coming to town Oct. 24 and San Jose State making the trip Oct. 26. UW is 5-1 in the month of October and enters the week with a 12-7 record overall and a 7-1 mark in conference play.
Last time out, Wyoming notched its fifth consecutive win Saturday as the Cowgirls defeated Boise State in four sets. It marked just the third time in program history that UW has won in Boise. The Cowgirls opened the week with another five-set victory, this time at Utah State.
KC McMahon led Wyoming with 35 kills (3.89 per set) over the weekend. McMahon tied a career-high with 18 kills in the win at Utah State. Faith Waitsman led the Cowgirls with 10 total blocks in the two matches while Madi Fields averaged 4.11 digs per set. Mackenzie Coates averaged 10.4 assists per set in the two wins and Halie McArdle recorded her first career double-double as she had 15 kills and 11 digs in the win at USU.
The Cowgirls enter the week as one of the most efficient teams in the league on both sides of the net as Wyoming ranks second in the Mountain West during conference play in both hitting percentage (.240) and opponent hitting percentage (.178).
2018 All-Mountain West performer Kayla Afoa leads Nevada with 279 kills in 2019. Her 3.93 kills and 4.52 points per set during conference play both rank second in the league. Setter Dalyn Burns is averaging 10.06 assists per set overall this season while her 11.18 a set during league play, is a Mountain West-best mark. The Wolfpack have three student-athletes that rank in the top 10 in the league in service aces per set this season.
Haylee Nelson leads San Jose State with 221 kills this season while Mamie Garard leads the Spartans averaging 6.18 assists per set on the year. In the back row, SJSU is led by one of the top liberos in the league in Sarah Smevog, who is averaging 4.42 digs per set and 4.91 per during conference play, which ranks second in the league. Laura Parts' .319 hitting percentage during MW play ranks 10th-best in the league. SJSU leads the league averaging 15.75 digs per set as a team and is third in opponent hitting percentage, allowing just a .188 clip.
