LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 20, 2019) – On a cold and blustery day, the Wyoming soccer team (6-6-4, 3-4-1 MW) closed out its home conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over the Utah State Aggies (6-9-1, 1-6-1 MW) on Sunday afternoon in Laramie. It was the final home match for
Charlotte Hume,
Carlee Martin,
Talia Sclafani,
Michaela Stark and
Summer Taube.
"It was so rewarding for our seniors to get a victory in their final home match and we thank them," head coach
Pete Cuadrado said. "They've put in a lot of hard work and time in this program and we've come so far in the last five years. They are a great group of women and I had the privilege to coach them."
Both teams came out firing to begin the match and tested each of the goalies early. Redshirt freshman
Jamie Tatum had the first look for Wyoming that was saved by goalie Diera Walton. Taylor Garza had a chance in the seventh minute which was picked up by goalie
Hannah Lee. Each team had two shots a piece over the next 15 minutes that came up empty. After a free kick by
Amber Vokoun, the ball bounced around the front of the net and reached Taube who placed in the upper left corner of the goal to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 advantage. It was the fifth goal of the season for Taube who leads the team. Freshman
Keelie Wortmann had the assist. Less than a minute later, Alecia Robinson crossed the ball in and it was dribbled in front of the goal and put in by Sid Barlow who evened up the score at 1-1 in the 25
th minute. Each team had a couple of chances over the next 15 minutes with no result to show for it. Late in the half, an indirect kick by sophomore
Indianna Asimus reached fellow sophomore
Savannah Warner who headed it in to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead going in to the lockerroom.
In the second half, both teams played in defensive mode as conditions continued to play tough. Sophomore goalie
Riley Furbush was tested early in the 50
th minute with a shot by Amber Marshall that she was able to stop. The Cowgirls had a couple of chances in the 53
rd and 64
th minutes which were blocked and saved. Utah State had the final four shots of the half with three of them being saved by Furbush. Wyoming was able to hold on to the 2-1 victory after 90 minutes of action. The Aggies outshot UW 5-2 in the second half and both teams had three corner kicks apiece.
"Obviously, it was a sloppy game. There is snow on the field, tough with the wind and cold. It was all about who wanted it more, I think the team saw how much that mattered and the effort was there," Cuadrado added. "I challenged them after Friday, it was such a battle against Boise State. Hopefully, we can get more consistent and today we did. With such a young team, we are starting to develop that consistency we have been looking for. Our goal is to continue that going forward."
Stark and Tatum finished the match with a team-high three shots with two shots on goal for Tatum. Asimus and Wortmann each added an assist. Five Cowgirls logged all 90 minutes in the match. Lee and Furbush each played 45 minutes in net and combined for nine saves. Walton went all 90 minutes for the Aggies. Wyoming had 12 shots compared to 11 by Utah State, while the two teams combined for 17 fouls.
Wyoming is back on the pitch on Friday to begin a two-game road swing. They open up the weekend against the UNLV Rebels, on Friday, followed by a match-up against the Nevada Wolf Pack. Friday's match is set for 8:30 p.m. MT followed by a 1 p.m. on Sunday.
