BOISE, Idaho (Oct. 19, 2019) – For just the third time in program history, the Wyoming volleyball team picked up a road win in Boise, defeating Boise State in four sets Saturday afternoon. Set scores went 23-25, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-16.
The Cowgirls (12-7, 7-1 MW) ended the match out-blocking the Broncos (12-7, 4-4 MW), 11-10. Boise State entered Saturday leading the conference during league play averaging 3.28 blocks per set. Jackie McBride led the Pokes with seven total (two solo, five assisted) blocks in the win while Tara Traphagan and Faith Waitsman had four each.
After the Pokes came up short in the opening set, they would get off to a bit of a slow start in the second set, trailing early, 4-1. However, the Cowgirls would right the ship for good later in the set, taking the lead at 17-16 and wouldn't trail again in the second. In the third set, UW led wire-to-wire and then in the fourth, the Pokes took the lead at 5-4 and wouldn't trail again the rest of the match.
KC McMahon led the way offensively for the Pokes as she recorded a match-high 17 kills in the win. Traphgan was the other Cowgirl in double figures with 11 kills while hitting .320. Emerson Cyza, McBride and Waitsman all added seven kills in the win. Cyza hit .462 while Waitsman hit a very impressive .583.
Wyoming ended up hitting .267 as a team while the Broncos were limited to a .146 clip. The Cowgirls ended the match with 10 more kills than BSU and also had 70 digs to the Broncos' 67. Both teams had seven service errors Saturday while Boise recorded seven aces with the Pokes recording five.
Mackenzie Coates had a solid all-around performance in the win as she tallied 41 assists while also adding four kills and four digs, to go along with three block assists.
In the back row, libero Madi Fields led a spirited defensive effort, along with Hailey Zuroske, with 16 digs. The 16 digs are a career-best for Zuroske while Fields had a team-high three service aces. Coates and Zuroske added the other two aces. Erika Jones also tallied double-figure digs with 10 while Traphagan chipped in with nine.
The Cowgirls now enter next weekend riding a season-best five-match winning streak. Wyoming returns to action with a pair of home matches beginning Thursday at 6:30 p.m., against Nevada.
