LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 17, 2019) – The Wyoming swimming and diving squads are back in the pool this weekend as it is set to host conference foe Air Force. The meet will be held at Laramie High School with the first diving event set for 3 p.m. MT with the swimming events set to start at 4 p.m.
Friday will be the first dual of the season for the Cowboys who have only competed twice this season. Last time, they were at the DU Relays taking second amongst the four-team field. The Cowboys took the 3x500 event with a time of 14:15.25 from the all freshmen team of
Robert Mitchell,
Cameron Murphy and
Thomas Diaz. The next relay to come away with the victory by the team of
PJ Musser,
James Bouda and
Brayden Love in the 3x100 butterfly. The group finished with a time of 2:30.52. In the 3x100 breaststroke,
Mitchell Hovis,
Grant Sloan and Bouda captured the event in a time of 2:50.27.
"Our rivalry with Air Force is really something that has become significant the last few years especially between the men's programs," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "I think our guys look forward to this meet every year it's also the first meet this year that our men are really competing in a dual."
The Cowgirls are coming off of a tough loss to Boise State last Friday and are now 1-1 in dual action. Junior
Hannah Mclean-Leonard shined as she would win both the 100 and 200 butterfly events along with second place finishes in the 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Last time, the Cowgirls swam at Laramie High School they took down Northern Colorado in a dual with a final score of 176.5-123.5.
"On the women's side, they are really coming into their own and creating their own identity. It should be a pretty close meet and were looking to some pretty intense competition."
For the Falcons on the men's side, they are coming off a season in which they finished fourth at the WAC Championships, which was one spot behind the Cowboys. This season, they have a 1-1 record after competing in the Intermountain Shootout, scoring a win over host school Colorado Mesa and losing to BYU.
On the women's side, the Falcons come off a 2018-19 campaign in which they finished tenth at the MW Championships, four spots behind the Cowgirls. Similar to the men's squad, the women's team also has a win over Colorado Mesa and loss to BYU after competing in the Intermountain Shootout. Last time out, the women's squad finished fifth out of five teams at the Rice Invitational.
The last time the two teams met was Oct. 19, 2018. The men won 179-121 while the women came out on top 166-132.
After taking on the Falcons, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be on the road against the Colorado School of Mines, on Friday, Oct. 25. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT in Golden.
