Cowgirls Continue Mountain West Play Against San Diego State on Wednesday

LARAMIE, Wyo. (January 7, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team continues its Mountain West schedule when it hosts San Diego State on Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a game scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. (MT). The Aztecs come to Laramie in search of their first conference win, but will face the nation's top-ranked three-point shooting team, as the Cowgirls convert 43.7 percent of their shots from long distance.
 
The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and on Stadium, and can be heard across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Reece Monaco on play-by-play and Wyoming Hall of Famer Margie McDonald with color commentary.
 
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls are 8-3 this season coming off a 90-62 win at home over UNLV. The Cowgirls are led offensively by senior forward Marta Gomez who averages 15.4 points per game while shooting among the nation's best from three-point range, 46.3 percent (31-of-67). Senior forward Bailee Cotton averages nearly a double-double with 11.7 points per contest and pulling down a team best 8.2 rebounds per game. Cotton has also taken a team-leading seven charges this season. Junior Taylor Rusk is scoring 10.8 points per contest while adding 39 assists and only 10 turnovers, the fourth best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country. Freshman Quinn Weidemann is the nation's top three-point shooter, making 2.2 treys per game at a 53.3 percent (24-of-45) clip. Senior guard Clara Tapia is in control of the Cowgirl offense, averaging a team-best 3.8 assists per game. Defensively, freshman guard Karla Erjavec has recorded 16 steals this season, while Cotton has eight blocks and Gomez has six blocks.
 
Offensively, the Cowgirls are shooting at a 46.8 percent (305-of-652) clip from the field while shooting 43.7 percent (101-of-231) from three to lead the nation and 74.8 percent (107-of-143) from the free throw line to average 74.4 points per game. The Cowgirls average 15.6 assists and just 10.8 turnovers per game. Opponents are shooting 43.4 percent (259-of-597) from the field, 37.8 percent (68-of-180) from three and 68.2 percent (90-of-132) from the free throw line to average 61.5 points per game. Cowgirl foes average 11.1 assists and 15.9 turnovers per game.
 
Head coach Joe Legerski is in his 16th year at the helm of the Cowgirls, and he has compiled a 297-180 record as Wyoming's head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history.

SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs are 5-7 this season and 0-1 in Mountain West play coming off a close loss to Boise State, 66-69. SDSU has four players averaging double-digit scoring: Sophia Ramos scores 15.5 points per game, Najé Murray puts in 13.4 points, Mallory Adams adds 11.7 points and Téa Adams scores 11.0 points per contest. Adams also leads the team by pulling down 8.0 rebounds per game, 2.9 of which come on the offensive glass. Ramos guides the offense and dishes out 4.7 assists per game, while Murray records 2.4 steals per contest to lead the Aztecs. Zayne Donrstauder is a presence in the paint, averaging 1.3 blocks per game.
 
Offensively, the Aztecs shoot 41.5 percent (289-of-696) from the field, 33.5 percent (64-of-191) from three and 69.1 percent (177-of-256) from the free throw line to average 68.3 points per game. SDSU averages 13.1 assists to 15.8 turnovers per contest. Defensively, opponents are shooting 40.4 percent (287-of-710) from the field, 32.4 percent (79-of-244) from three and 68.3 percent (142-of-208) from the free throw line to average 66.3 points per game. Opponents average 16.2 assists and 15.0 turnovers per contest against the Aztecs.
 
Head coach Stacie Terry is in her sixth season at San Diego State and owns a 59-93 record at the helm of the Aztecs.
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SAN DIEGO STATE
The Cowgirls and Aztecs have met on the hardwood 56 times, and the series is split evenly, 28-28. San Diego State has won four of the last six and 10 of the last 14 games. The Cowgirls have won three of the last four in Laramie, however. Overall, Wyoming holds an 18-7 advantage here at 7,220 feet over the Aztecs. The first game in the series was played in 1991 when both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
