LARAMIE, Wyo. (January 28, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirls (11-5, 4-3 MW) will travel to California for the second time in a week in order to face the Fresno State Bulldogs. Tip off in the Save Mart Center is set for 8 p.m. (MT). The Cowgirls were in the Golden State last week, where they picked up their first road win of the season over San José State. Fresno State (13-5, 6-1 MW) is coming off a three-point win over Colorado State on Saturday.
The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and on Stadium, and can be heard across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Reece Monaco on play-by-play and Wyoming Hall of Famer Margie McDonald with color commentary.
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls are 11-5 this season coming off a 64-52 win over Boise State, snapping the Broncos' 10-game winning streak. The Cowgirls are led offensively by senior forward
Marta Gomez who averages 15.3 points per game while adding 4.6 rebounds per contest. Senior forward
Bailee Cotton averages nearly a double-double with 11.2 points per contest and pulling down a team best 8.8 rebounds per game.
Cotton has also taken a team-leading 12 charges this season. Junior
Taylor Rusk is scoring 10.5 points per contest while adding 55 assists and only 16 turnovers, the fifth best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country. Senior guard
Clara Tapia leads the team in the assist department with 56 on the year. Defensively, freshman guard
Karla Erjavec has recorded 22 steals this season, while
Cotton has 12 blocks.
Offensively, the Cowgirls are shooting at a 46.2 percent (427-of-925) clip from the field while shooting 40.7 percent (135-of-332) from three and 74.6 percent (167-of-224) from the free throw line to average 72.2 points per game. The Cowgirls average 15.6 assists and just 11.1 turnovers per game. Opponents are shooting 42.5 percent (364-of-857) from the field, 35.9 percent (89-of-248) from three and 71.1 percent (140-of-197) from the free throw line to average 59.8 points per game. Cowgirl foes average 10.4 assists and 15.4 turnovers per game.
Head coach
Joe Legerski is in his 16th year at the helm of the Cowgirls, and he has compiled a 300-182 record as Wyoming's head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE
The Bulldogs are 13-5 on the season and sit in a tie for second place in the Mountain West with a 6-1 record following a 57-54 win over Colorado State. Candice White leads Fresno State - and the Mountain West - with 19.1 points per game. She also adds 5.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. Maddi Utti adds 11.4 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game, while Aly Gamez joins that duo in double-figure scoring, pouring in 11.0 points and dishing out a team-best 3.3 assists each time she steps on the hardwood. Utti protects the paint with a team-best 15 blocks, while Gamez leads the Bulldogs with 39 steals.
Fresno State shoots 43.5 percent (487-of-1120) from the field, 33.8 percent (147-of-435) from three and 77.9 percent (176-of-226) from the free throw line to average 72.1 points per game. The Bulldogs average 16.1 assists and 14.8 turnovers per contest. Defensively, opponents are shooting 41.5 percent (422-of-1017) from the field, 32.8 percent (115-of-351) from three and 66.9 percent (158-of-236) from the charity strip to average 62.1 points per game. Opponents average 13.5 assists and 18.8 turnovers each game.
Head coach Jaime White is 93-57 in five years at the helm of the Bulldogs and owns a 210-185 record in 13 years overall as a Division I head coach. White was an assistant at Utah from 2001-03 with current Wyoming head coach
Joe Legerski, and she joined
Legerski's first staff at Wyoming from 2004-06.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST FRESNO STATE
The Bulldogs own the all-time series, 19-12, but Wyoming took the last meeting, a 74-57 decision in Laramie. The last time the squads met in Fresno, the Bulldogs earned a 60-47 win. In fact, Fresno State has won nine of the last 11 meetings between the two teams, and 11 of the 15 games since the two teams became Mountain West foes in 2012-13. Wyoming's last win in Fresno came in 1996 when the Cowgirls picked up a 58-52 victory. Overall, the Bulldogs have won the last eight meetings in Fresno.
