Cowboys Entertain San José State for Mid-Week Contest

Maury Brown of Cheyenne, Wyo., has purchased 2,000 complimentary tickets for Wednesday’s game

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 22, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowboys will entertain the San José State Spartans on Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. start in the Arena-Auditorium. Wyoming is 14-2 all-time against the Spartans and have won five-straight meetings.
 
As a way to show support for a young Wyoming Cowboy Basketball team that is facing adversity, Maury Brown of Cheyenne, Wyo., has purchased 2,000 complimentary tickets for Wednesday's game. Fans may come by the UW Athletics Ticket Office throughout the day on Tuesday, Jan. 22 beginning at 10 a.m. to pick up the complimentary tickets.  Tickets may be also be picked up throughout the day on Wednesday up until tipoff.  Businesses are encouraged to invite their staffs, and everyone is encouraged to bring family and friends to cheer on the Pokes on Wednesday night.  It is anticipated that there will be enough complimentary tickets to accommodate everyone, so it is a great opportunity for fans to show their support for a young Cowboy team.
 
Fans can watch, listen to the contest and follow stats on GoWyo.com. The contest will be streamed on the MW Network. The contest will be broadcast live on radio over the 25 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network, as Dave Walsh and Kevin McKinney will call the action.
 
A Look at the Matchup
Wyoming heads into Wednesday's contest with a 4-14 overall record and a 0-5 mark in the MW. Wyoming fell at New Mexico on Saturday by a score of 83-53. Wyoming, who has averaged 24 free throws per game has only gotten to the free throw line 31 times over the last two games.
 
The Cowboys have been defending the rim aggressively recently with four blocks in five of the last six games. The Pokes also recorded 10 steals and forced 19 turnovers at New Mexico. The 10 steals were tied for the second most this season.
 
The Spartans are 3-14 overall and 0-5 in the MW. San José State lost to UNLV on Saturday by a score of 94-56. SJSU is a solid rebounding team averaging 36.4 rebounds per game to rank fourth in the conference.
 
Opponents are shooting 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the arc against the Spartans this season both ranking No. 11 in the league. The Spartans also average 17.1 turnovers per game on the season and average 3.7 steals per game.
 
Each Team's Leaders
Wyoming is lead in scoring, rebounding and assists by senior guard Justin James. The second-highest active scorer in the MW leads the league at 20.6 points per game. He ranks third in the MW averaging 9.1 rebounds per game and is seventh in assists at four per game. He ranks eighth in UW history in points and field goals made.
 
Redshirt freshman Hunter Thompson adds 11.2 points per game on the season along with 3.7 rebounds. He is shooting 47 percent from behind the arc this season going 25-of-53. Freshman Trevon "TJ" Taylor adds seven points per game. He led the Pokes in rebounding and had a career-high four assists at New Mexico.
 
The Spartans are led by Michael Steadman at 12.4 points per game. He also leads the team grabbing 8.4 rebounds per game. Brae Ivey adds 10.5 points per game on the season and has a team-high 61 assists. Noah Baumann adds 9.8 points per game, as he leads the team with 42 three pointers on the year.
 
About The Series
Wyoming holds a 14-2 record in the all-time series against the Spartans. The Pokes also hold an 8-0 record against SJSU. Head coach Allen Edwards is 5-0 all-time against San José State.
