LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 17, 2019) – The Cowgirl swimming and diving teams will be back action to take on conference opponent Boise State this weekend. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. MT on Saturday and take place at Laramie High School.
On Friday, the Cowgirls and Broncos will compete in an exhibition event that will consist of 12 races and 1 diving event. The event will not be scored and the racing will start at 4 p.m.
"We are going to do a sprint style meet that isn't as common in college swimming," head coach
Dave Denniston said. "They are going get to wear the fast suits and swim in events that are shorter. It gives us a chance to swim against a great team in Boise State."
The Cowgirls are returning to action after a strong road trip in California the first week of January. They competed in four duals and came away with 3-1 record on the weekend with each of their victories coming by a margin of 90 points or more. To go along with a solid team performance, sophomore
Hannah Mclean-Leonard was named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week after she recorded five first place finishes over the four duals. It was the first time in her career earning the honor and it was the second time this season a Cowgirl has won the award.
"We are coming off a really great holiday trip. The team just gelled together and I think it did a lot for our team culture," he added. "It will be a neat thing for us getting to compete at the high school and it will be good for fan experience."
On the season, the Cowgirls boast a 9-2 record winning five of their last six duals as they will look to keep it rolling against a tough Boise State team.
"It will probably be one pf the biggest challenges for our women team this season. Boise State was the conference champion last year so if we can find a way to beat them it's going to be significant for the end of their season."
The Broncos are having a similarly successful season as they hold a 5-1 dual record on the season. Last time out, they defeated Nevada 165-135 on Dec. 8. The two teams have faced three common opponents on the year with both teams holding wins over Idaho and Washington State.
This meet will also be that last time Wyoming Swimming and Diving competes in Laramie this season.
