Last Time Out
The 13th-ranked Wyoming wrestling team handled its business on Friday night, sweeping the Cowboy Shootout with wins over No. 15 North Carolina, Army and American inside the Arena-Auditorium.
The Cowboys opened the night with a big come-from-behind win over North Carolina, in which the Pokes rattled off 12-straight points to defeat the Tar Heels, 20-15. In its second dual of the night, Wyoming was able to take care of a tough Army team, 27-9. The dual was complete with a handful of upsets by Cowboys, including a ranked win by
Tate Samuelson in his first career start. The Cowboys wrapped up the night with a 25-14 win over American, in which they took seven of the 10 bouts.
Climbing Cowboys
Coming in at No. 11 in the Intermat dual meet rankings and No. 12 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, the Cowboys continue to ascend up the college wrestling polls. The Pokes' No. 12 spot in the NWCA poll marks the program's highest ranking in the Coaches Poll since 2011-12. Wyoming reached as high as No. 10 that season and finished the campaign ranked 11th.
Know the Foe
Oregon State enters this Sunday's dual at 1-3, with the Beavers' lone win coming in their season opener against CSU Bakersfield. Oregon State, slotted No. 17 in the FloWrestling NCAA Tournament projections, has lost three in a row, including two to No. 20 North Dakota State and No. 6 Michigan. The Beaver lineup is headlined by a handful of impressive names, including third-ranked 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser--a 2018 All-American and two-time Pac-12 Champion--and the nation's fourth-ranked heavyweight Amar Dhesi, who is a two-time All-American coming off a third-place finish at the national tournament last season.
Before heading to Laramie, the Beavers will first travel to Greeley, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado. Oregon State is led by 13th-year head coach Jim Zalesky.
The Series: Oregon State
• The Cowboys and Beavers are set to collide for the 32nd time in the two programs' histories on Sunday.
• The series between the two programs dates back to 1960, when Wyoming dropped the Beavers, 20-5, in Laramie.
• Oregon State has had the upper hand for a majority of the series, running up a 21-10 record against the Pokes.
• Wyoming, however, is looking for its third-straight win over the Beavers, coming off a 29-12 win last year.
