LARAMIE, Wyo. (January 10, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team will compete in its second road game of the Mountain West season when it travels to Logan to face Utah State on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip off in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum is scheduled for 2 p.m. (MT). The Cowgirls will look for their first road win of the season, and are coming off the most offensively explosive two-game stretch against Mountain West foes in school history. The combined 177 points scored against UNLV and San Diego State are the most the Cowgirls have ever scored in back-to-back MW contests.
The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network and on Stadium, and can be heard across the 25 stations of the Cowgirl Radio Network with Reece Monaco on play-by-play and Wyoming Hall of Famer Margie McDonald with color commentary.
A LOOK AT THE COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls are 9-3 this season coming off an 87-45 win at home over San Diego State. The Cowgirls are led offensively by senior forward
Marta Gomez who averages 14.3 points per game while adding 4.6 rebounds per contest. Senior forward
Bailee Cotton averages nearly a double-double with 11.3 points per contest and pulling down a team best 8.1 rebounds per game.
Cotton has also taken a team-leading seven charges this season. Junior
Taylor Rusk is scoring 10.9 points per contest while adding a team-best 44 assists and only 10 turnovers, the second best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country. Freshman
Quinn Weidemann is the nation's top three-point shooter, making 2.2 treys per game at a 54.2 percent (26-of-48) clip. Senior guard
Clara Tapia is just behind
Rusk in the assist department with 43 on the year. Defensively, freshman guard
Karla Erjavec has recorded 17 steals this season, while
Cotton has 10 blocks.
Offensively, the Cowgirls are shooting at a 47.4 percent (338-of-713) clip from the field while shooting 43.7 percent (111-of-254) from three to lead the nation and 76.1 percent (118-of-155) from the free throw line to average 75.4 points per game. The Cowgirls average 15.8 assists and just 10.4 turnovers per game. Opponents are shooting 42.6 percent (275-of-645) from the field, 37.0 percent (71-of-192) from three and 69.4 percent (100-of-144) from the free throw line to average 60.1 points per game. Cowgirl foes average 10.4 assists and 16.2 turnovers per game.
Head coach
Joe Legerski is in his 16th year at the helm of the Cowgirls, and he has compiled a 298-180 record as Wyoming's head coach. He is the winningest coach in program history.
SCOUTING UTAH STATE
The Aggies are 7-7 this season with a 2-1 record in league play following a 70-59 loss on the road against Fresno State. Shannon Dufficy leads the way for the Aggies, as she averages a team leading 15.3 points and a Mountain West leading 9.9 rebounds per contest. She's also third in the league in steals at 2.1 per game and tied for sixth in blocks with 1.1 per contest. Olivia West scores 9.1 points per game, while Steph Gorman pours in 8.9 points each game. Eliza West leads the team with 72 assists for a per game average of 5.1. Deja Mason leads the paint defense, averaging 1.3 blocks per game.
Offensively, the Aggies are shooting 40.8 percent (343-of-841) from the field, 30.6 percent (75-of-245) from three and 71.0 percent (120-of-169) from the free throw line to average 62.9 points per game. Utah State averages 15.5 assists and 16.1 turnovers each contest. Defensively, USU holds opponents to 38.0 percent (298-of-784) from the field, 27.5 percent (69-of-251) from three and 70.7 percent (174-of-246) from the free throw line to score 59.9 points per game. Opponents average 10.5 assists and 16.5 turnovers per game.
Head coach Jerry Finkbeiner is in his seventh season at the helm of the Aggies and owns an 86-115 record at Utah State. Overall, he is 560-357 in 30 seasons as a head coach.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UTAH STATE
The Cowgirls own the series lead over the Aggies, 20-8, and have won six of the last seven matchups against Utah State. On the road, Wyoming is 10-4 against Utah State, and has taken three of the last four contest in Logan. In 1983, the Cowgirls put up 113 points against Utah State at home, and that total is still the third most points scored in a game in Wyoming's history. Also in that game, the Cowgirls went 50-of-103 from the field, single-game school records for both field goals made and attempted.
