LINCOLN, Neb. – The Cowgirls placed fifth out of 12 Division I teams with 138 points as freshman
Katelyn Mitchem was UW's top overall finisher for the second-straight race. The Broomfield, Colo., native navigated the six-kilometer course in 22:06.7 to place 16
th out of well over 100 runners at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational hosted by both Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan.
"We had a solid team performance today," associate head coach
Amanda Clower said after the race. "Katelyn had another great race leading our team as a freshman. Ashley (Bock) and Kacey (Doner) worked well throughout the race together, and it was great to have Emily (Person) back competing today."
Juniors
Ashley Bock and
Kacey Doner both placed inside the top 25 overall, as they finished 20
th and 22
nd with times of 22:14.9 and 22:17.7, respectively. Senior
Emily Person made her season debut and finished 32
nd with a time of 22:43.6.
"I was very impressed to see our team push together in humid and hot conditions," Clower said. "They got out and put themselves in good positions and continued to fight through to the end."
Senior
Kiah Leonard placed 48
th with a time of 23:14.3 to round out UW's scorers. Freshmen
Addi Iken and
Kaylee Bentley finished 63
rd and 71
st with times of 23:40.6 and 23:58.9, respectively. Senior
Regan VanDePol recorded a time 24:11.1, while freshman
Victoria Tenpenny finished in 25:50.2
"We have three good weeks of training ahead of us before our next competition, so we will take advantage of that time," Clower said.
The No. 12-ranked Michigan squad placed first with 20 points. The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Roadrunner Invite in Denver, Colo.
