Tyree’s Talks: The Experienced Group of Tight Ends

Senior tight end Tyree Mayfield is having a busy summer with workouts for the upcoming season and also spending time as an intern in the media relations office. During his time in the office he decided to put his writing skills on display with a journal called "Tyree's Talks." In the first edition, Mayfield talks about the experienced group of tight ends that will be on the field for UW this season.

This group of tight ends is an exceptionally close one.  Austin Fort and I came to Wyoming in the same recruiting class and even though he left for a year and got moved to tight end late, it feels like he has been in the meeting room the whole time.

The same thing can be said for Josh Harshman.  He came a year later than I did, but he was the closest to my age so we clicked very quickly.  Having relationships like this is very beneficial to us because if someone messes up or doesn't do what they are supposed to, no one hesitates to tell them about it.

It also helps that we are all seniors and have seen a lot of playing time.  We don't always have to look to the coaches for answers. Coach Bath has done a great job with us and entrusts us to help teach the younger guys about the position.  If one of us have a question about what works on the field we look to one another for the answers.

These questions aren't only coming from us three seniors either; Nate Weinman and Mason Keeler will ask us veteran players questions quite a bit.  They trust in our judgement because we have all seen the field and know the little tips and tricks that will make you successful.

All of this doesn't only benefit us, but it also helps out Coach Bath, as he continues to work on other techniques to make us a complete unit.  At times during spring ball, he would look to the three older guys for answers about technique for the younger guys.  Coach Bath has given us a lot of trust and responsibly over the summer because of that.  Each week, one of the seniors is the captain of the week and has to run position drills after we work out.  We also get one day during the week to run a meeting and teach everyone else technique and give advice.

However, not all of our knowledge came from just playing on the field and from the coaches; we had a great teacher/role model in Jake Hollister.  Hollister's self-driven perfection on ever little detail helped Josh and I when we were just starting off.  He didn't talk much on the field, but when he did everyone would listen. Off the field he was like family to Josh, Austin and I, giving each other nicknames and giving each other a hard time.  Even to this day, we all ask him up for advice and tips.
